1975 CB750F just purchased
« on: April 17, 2017, 07:49:26 AM »
I have been searching since October last fall for a doner bike for a cafe racer project. Recently a 1975 750 Super Sport came up. The bike has 15,235 miles on and is a original owner. It had been sitting in his shed for over a year, when he tried to start it up for me it had no spark. Since it had been sitting for some time I figured the oil would have had water from condensation. So I told him to let it be I would change the oil before trying to fire it up and I would buy it.
My intention was to build a cafe racer but this might be a good candidate for a restoration.  It has some oil seepage between cylinder and head as you can see on picture.  I don't intend to do anything besides clean it up and get it going for the summer, this will be a 3 or 4 winter project for me.
I'm posting this hoping to get ideas and suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
Arnold

I know I'm the minority here, but I vote chop it. If it was a K I'd feel differently, but the Fs are not as desirable, and in my opinion, look better as café racers.

Do NOT chop it up! It's too nice AND F's are the MOST desirable to some of us. Plus they perform better that the K models vs 72-73 up as the early K's had hotter engines than the later K's. If you get the urge to chop something then find a better candidate that needs work.

Anyway, you found a really nice condition bike. Don't worry about the oil on the head. They all do that eventually. Just leave that alone unless you have a REAL reason to open up the engine. It's just not worth it. Early F. Built Jan/Feb 1975. Feel free to PM me if I can help. After all, I am the self appointed MuthaF'r. I've had mine since 4/75 when they first hit the US shores the first week.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Dont cafe it, if you want a cafe..clean that one up good and get it running good and sell at a profit..then use that money to build a cafe.

I could do that, I've already been offered twice what I paid for it from a local guy who has a '73K. But I want this one, the more I read up on it the more I like it. I like the elongated tank and the rear disc brake, and like has already been mentioned, it already is a cafe racer model of the K.

i agree with fly.  3000 service and ride it.  fix what needs fixing to run well.  then spend a winter getting it back to perfect.

Keep it how it is! there are so many other bikes that can be chopped easily, it's so much harder to make a bike look like this again after it's been altered.

Another vote for clean it up and ride.
Your pics. show a very good, unmolested example  that are getting harder to find. Its pretty easy to find a modified one, but nice stock ones are rare. About the same miles and shape to the 78F I picked up last fall that's cleaned up well and has turned out to be an very enjoyable ride.

+1.  That should settle that.  Nice find, congrats.

How could you not want to get it running and roadworthy now rather that make it a long term project?

I was a dumb kid when I started chopping up my mint '76F. Once I realized how big the mistake was, it was too late, since so much had been modified. To redeem myself, I bought another '76F frame that I will put all the stock bits back on so I can have a nice example of a stock-ish F. I say stockish because I am going to change cosmetic things about it that are totally reversible in every way.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.
