The 405 is just a casting number. Always replace the upper and lower cases as a set for best bearing alignment. Since your motor will be apart, I would advise checking the valve-guides for wear.........especially if 18000 miles or higher.  If you get a complete motor and just swap.........you may have some top-end parts to sell. If you miss your opportunity, I have a set of cases or a complete motor available in Wisconsin.

I know this is an F2-F3 thread and I have researched and searched the forum and internet to find what model I have so I apologize if this ends up being a repeat... My Cb750f has a frame number: CB750F1035468 and an engine number 750E2557914.   I contacted the original owner in Norway and he says the bike was made in 1975 for the 1976 market. It was the sulphur yellow and he purchased it from the Honda dealer in 1978.  I contacted all the other previous owners and none say the engine was changed. One weird thing too, it has a chrome swing arm. Any ideas or suggestions to find out the actual year of this bike? David Silver Spares say it's a 1977 but that goes against what the original owner has told me.

In the US that would be a 1976 CB750F1 by both serial numbers and color. European F's are a little different in year designation and a few different non-engine parts. The 1976 started production in 4/1975 with a color change.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)
