Dunstall Power exhausts
« on: December 15, 2006, 06:41:59 AM »
I've had it in the back of my mind ever since getting my 650 for resto' that I'll need to do something about the rotten left-hand 2-1 silencer. No hurry, as there's plenty of other work needed, but I've been keeping my eye on various adverts/ ebay etc, 'just in case'.

Well, today in the local free-ads paper there's a pair of BNIB Dunstall Power silencers from the early 80's, at an attractive price. So I have a look and, other than minor pitting on some chrome (they've been in their box in a garage for 28 years) they are absolutely as new, never out the box, never been on a bike. Complete with a letter (type-written, remember them  ;)) saying thanks for your purchase, blah, blah, the new 1979 catalogue is now available, price £1.50.

Seems the ex-husband bought them for a Ducati, had a (minor) accident and lost interest in doing much work to the bike, so he never fitted them. So now it's clearout time and I'm a lucky boy  ;D ;D ;D

Perfect, that dates them spot on for the period on my '79 650. Will post some pics later.

regards, Phil

Here's a couple of pictures. Price written on the box is £35.99 - hasn't depreciated too much over time  ;D

Don't think I'll take up the offer on the quieter version  :D  :D  :D

What a sweet find!

What headers do these go on?  I've also been looking at the evil-bay @ the Dunstall "replica" type silencers, the problem is I have a 4-2 setup now that I can't picture working w/ a silencer like that...  Do you fab up the collector section for each side or does yours have existing 4-2 collectors that will fit.    Oh yea keep us posted I'd love to see some more pics!!!   ;D

Nice find, I’ve heard one of those silencers fitted on a 400 and it wasn’t very silent, :o now all you have to do is finish that project and fit them and make some noise! ;D

The plan is to fit them to the existing headers. The current LH silencer is rotten, see under footpeg in pic below, so if I chop it off right where the weld joint is these will slip over and clamp to the single pipe where the pair meet. My RH silencer is in good condition - I don't want to cut up a good one, so I'll be looking out for a rotten RH silencer to use the front pipes from. Plenty of time before i need that just yet. Will be scouring autojumble and breakers.

Hi Namba1032,

looking good - like your engine finish. Did you paint most of the cases with it all bolted together? I guess so looking at the masking over the trigger assembly. Looks excellent.

I'm thinking of black headers with the chrome Dunstall's - especially as the finish on the exisiting headers is pretty poor, but they're solid. Nice Yamaha too and a clean workshop  8)

Keep at it,

Phil,

Thanks for the comments, it still has a ways to go but thats how shes doing as of now until funds prevale.. When I refinished the engine I first bead blasted the cylinder block, head, and rocker cover while it was all together. I obviously closed off the exhaust and intake very tightly when I did this to make sure none of the sand went in. I also made a big cardboard cut out that I put over the top of the bottom end at the base of the cylinder block to act as a shrowd so the majority of the beads woudldnt even touch the bottom end. I used one of those portable blaster guns that you hookup to an air compressor. It worked great to get all the corrosion off the fins on the top end. Then I knocked off any loose paint on the bottom end, hit it with a little sand paper here and there where it would be noticable that it had chipped off.. Then I removed all the engine covers and taped off under them, for the clutch I actually just set a towel around it and made sure it was tight enough in there that it would keep the paint out. After that I taped off the top end that I bead blasted, hung it from a chain fall, and sprayed it with some high temp silver. After that I took off the tape from the top end, and cleared the whole thing with high temp clear. I wanted to make sure the fins on the cylinder block didnt corrode again... As you can see from the pictures I used the wrong clear, instead of 1500 degree it was 500... So it turned brown when I got it running... But thats ok, Im going to be pulling it out over winter and replacing the top end seals anyway... so I'll blast them again and I've been thinking about doing it black with the PJ1.

The yamaha is actually the CB650, I was trying to find a tank that would fit the bike that had knee inserts that would look decent. But I think over winter Im going to talk to mototumbi and see if I can get them to do a dunstall tank that would fit the 650. I have an old junk tank that I can cut the bottom off and send to them to see if they can match it up.. we'll see. Those dunstalls you found were a great find Im sure they're going to look awsome on that bike when its finished. Keep it up, nice to see a guy working on a 650 instead of a 750. I thought I was the only one haha.

Brian

Just got an old tooth brush, some steel wire to poke through the jets and stuff, an air compressor to blow all the crap out and sprayed them down with carb cleaner while doing it. On the accelerator pump cap I did have to heat that up to get the junk out of it, but other than that just a good wash with the carb cleaner and they were like new. I bought the rebuild kits from partsnmore.com to rebuild to replace all the seals and float needles. Set the float height and put them back on the bike.

Haha noo, Im probably the one that looks like the idiot, trying to put a yamaha tank on a honda.  :D The funny thing though is the fact that it lines up almost perfectly. If I actually do end up mounting it, all Im going to have to do is move the front tank mounts on the tank  down a couple inches. Well Im excited to hear about how your projects come. Happy holidays.
