just install it back behind the carbs, in front of the oil bag.

What about a belly pan with hollow tubes running through it, this is a pretty common thing on auto transmission pans....

Damn! I can't open the pic (stupid Army computer!) so I can't see why you don't want to mount it in the usual spot? I saw a Lockhart cooler mounted between the headlight and front fender in my "Great Bikes of the 70's" book, it looked pretty, er, cool! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The Harley ones aren't wide enough for a Honda 4 frame.

The space between the air filters and oil tank is less than an inch.

If I put it underneath I could put a skid plate over it to protect it.

The question I still have is concerning oil flow.........I'm almost positive that the oil pump has to be the lowest point on these bikes. Anybody know for sure?

I just bought a Lockhart that hangs vertical instead of the normal horizontal style and it's only 3 inches wide so maybe I can fit it in between the 2 center exhaust pipes.

If the oil cooler is placed inline with the pump output (like where the oil filter is) and the lines don't restrict the flow, then the pressure will keep the oil flowing.  Are you going to use a temperature controlled bypass to prevent over-cooling the oil and causing oiling issues?

and some early Rickman frames for CB750. They didn't have an oil tank just what would fit in all the tubing (took a long time to warm the oil up, too much surface area radiating heat)

Geez Matt, what's wrong with having a nice chrome cooler sitting up there in the breeze? You've got plenty of room for a chrome Lockhart and braided lines there, and I don't think it'll detract from the custom look? Nice looking scoot, by the way! ;D

Is there any reason you need an oil cooler?  Just curious.  I pulled the one that came with my bike off.  I would get to work 14 miles away some cool mornings and it still wouldn't idle because it had not warmed up yet.

Matt,
I saw a guy at a car show one time that had put a SBC 350 into a '97 Cavalier.  It was so big that the harmonic balancer stuck out the hood.  Anyway, it didn't leave any room for a radiator so he put the radiator under the car.  Covered it with some heavy duty expanded-metal which let air through but protected the fins.  Seemed to work fine.

As a side note, what about one fo those remote filters back by the axle.  If you ran it in solid line, like copper, it would cool some but not too much.  HD guys do it all the time.

I have a cooler that would probably work for your application.  Send me a PM and I'll shoot you a pic.

What I forgot to mention is that the dyna coils are going to be mounted under the neck where they can stay cool, but I'm now thinking of mounting a cooler there the thing is the coolers I have so far (3) would look #$%*ty there. A small Lockhart would work great but I'm running out of time and can't find one......I've been biding on ebay but they are going for too much. ;D

I powdercoated the entire motor and I am hoping to compensate by adding a cooler.

Ha ha, well, apart from the hair (I've worn a crew cut since I joined the Army in 1977, it kinda goes with the job............) you're not far wrong Mike, and as far as "Born to be wild" goes, check that engine, it's the 836 with your stage 3 head, Megacycle 125/75 cam, Keihin CR carbs etc, so it does get VERY wild, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Mate you've got enough room for both a cooler and your coils, but seriously, why not run an electrics box under your carbs like all the Honda 750 chopper guys did back in the day?

I've got one under my bench, it's just a vented box with brackets for your battery, coils, regulator/rectifier etc?

It keeps all your electrics tidy, you can get it chromed and it accentuates the look! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I do run a Santee box under the carbs......

But the coils were getting too hot under there...so I sacrificed fit for function.......

actually only the old Finch boxes ran the coils in them and they were very tight

The rest mounted under the neck in a chrome "cow bell" box.

That's funny as I was going to ask you if...or what...that head was attched to Terry. That thing must go pretty good with those carbs etc. That head was mint. ;) That bike should put some #$%* in some kids pants. ;) Actually...I think the port in my avatar is your head. ;)

Ha ha, it sure does Mike, can you imagine 120 MPH in third gear in the "sit up and beg" riding position? It put some shiit in my pants, for sure! The weather here is still good one day before the official start of winter, so I might drag the old bugger out and give it a run.

I've just about worked out how to use my Mikuni 29mm smooth bore carbs on it, have you tried them? The Keihin CR's are ok, but I've always had good results with Mikuni's on my Suzy's? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yep, I can see that mate, and you're right, putting the coils (or an oil cooler) behind the engine isn't a good idea, as all it's gonna get is hot air off the engine. You might have to continue with your "Function over form" initiative and run the cooler and the coils out there in the cool air. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Maybe you're right to mount it underslung - if it's out in the breeze it's susceptible to the pressure washer? Ooops!! Wrong thread  ;D

One of the guys on Yamaha XS650 site made a cooler to fit under engine.
He used 11 feet of copper pipe then used 1/8" alloy plate to protect it from rocks, speed bumps, etc.

anyone have experience with these?  i like the fact that they have built in fittings for an oil-cooler which i really want to run on my bike to help it stay a little cooler.
