Bought a used 6v coil for my cl90 need to test
« on: June 06, 2017, 07:40:38 AM »
I need to figure out what the resistance between the primary and secondary are for my coil.. I tested them and got 1.7 on the low side and got 9200k on the primary I believe but doesn't help if don't know if that's satisfactory

Tested again and got 1.6 on low side and high voltage side got 9218 think that's showing good but may need some advice as I'm not 100% sure

I found on another forum that say to test between the two small wires 4 to 6 ohms between one of them and the spark plug wire 8k to 15k ohms

Huh.. Well I'm getting like 1.6 on small wires. Not sure hope it is good. Also wish I knew a little more about doing a bench test with it to see if it works

there is a big difference for coils used to cdi ignision and the older points systems
..thek a moped forum they have Yamaha fs1  and most Honda system data...all vho use rotating magenet( flyvheel) system is mostly the same but the coils differ from cdi and point kontroled system..

think you can test the coil..power it vith 12 volt. positive on the small vire vho normal gets power from the feed coil..and negative on the erth konnekted vire...and hold the heighvolt vire to the ground/negative vire..or a few milineters from it..then power the coil..and vhen brake the power..it gives a impuls...from the heighvolt vire to the ground...12 volt is not the korrekr voltage for the coli..think they get 100-150 volt from the feed coil..but think you vill get some reaktion even vith this low ..put a fuse inn to protekt the vires..
the 3 konnektions on this coils is 1 vire inn  ,,one ground and 1 autput heighvolt. the2 coils is between the ground and the autput  vire.the ground is negative..and is needet to give a full elektric cirklute..

looks like mine cd 50 coil..i just have the kondensator in the hot engine..not a good place for it,,most small Honda have it at the coil..up in the frame..
think mine old coil vas a Nippon denso..and the replasment vas a mitchubischi..(.or how it  ::)

Yes my condenser is at the coil not mounted inside the motor like some engines it is mounted above the motor inside the frame so in order to remove my old one the motor needs to be dropped

I have some CT90 / ST90  resistance numbers stored on a computer at home, not here. But I think your values are pretty good if you have the spark plug cap removed.

More to follow tonight.

Hello,

Completely forgot to send you those resistance values.  Please forgive me. The following values are from a similar year CT90 coil as your CL90 coil. Any measurement using the main spark plug high tension wire is with the spark plug cap removed.

On a good CT90 coil, look for just a few ohms when measuring between the coil battery wire (often blue) and the coil ground wire, often green.  A bad coil could have a thousand or more ohms or perhaps no continuity at all due to being "open".

For secondary resistance, measure between the spark plug wire and the green wire.  A good coil can measure anywhere from 5000 to 10,000 ohms of resistance. Again, this is WITHOUT the plug cap installed because many spark plug caps are resistor caps to reduce radio noise around cars.

For checks of continuity of the spark plug wire to ground, there should be no continuity at all for a good coil.  A bad coil will show continuity possibly due to loss of the enamel wire insulation and the wire touching the coil frame.

Again, please forgive me here for my lateness.

Well thanks for the reply I do appreciate that. Must be good coil then because of values I got were similar to what you described. Although ended up using my original coil as found was still good. Also due to the fact that coil I purchased seemed to be a bit smaller in diameter for some reason? Not quite sure why but was at least 1/4 inch overall diameter smaller than my original. Probably just keep the one I purchased for backup just in case. That's if it would even work due to the size difference

Your smaller coil was very likely for a CDI ignition system. Those coils can get by being physically smaller because their input voltage is larger to begin with - perhaps a hundred volts input to the primary.

A points ignition coil has to have a larger primary because in our case, it's gotta' turn six volts into many thousands of volts.
