exhaust feedback
« on: August 13, 2017, 08:28:50 AM »
Hey all, I'm looking at potentially upgrading my headers and muffler. I currently have a MAC 4into1 megaphone with the black finish, which I installed a few years ago. Unfortunately I can't keep her in a shed or garage, so she stays outside covered. This has had a horrible effect on headers, and they have started developing rust. I tried some sandpaper and rust converter, but that only lasted about a season before more started building up.

I've been looking at the delkevic stainless steel 4into1 systems. They look pretty nice, but I have yet to see any reviews on their longevity. Do any owners who have had them installed for a few years (preferably with exposure to the elements) frequent the forum that could give feedback? Rust? Bronzing? Going from a MAC exhaust, would rejetting be necessary? I'm talking about a 77 cb550k. If you have another exhaust you've installed and swear by, please let me know.

Other complicating matter, when I had my header mounting bolts installed by a shop, they installed more than half of them backwards, so the clearance for the nut to grip the header mounting bolt once the flanges and shims are in place is barely enough to grip and maintain tightness on some pipes. I don't want to have to try uninstalling them, potentially breaking them in the head and requiring a more exhaustive surgery, so any notes on tolerances/clearances would be appreciated, though I know this is probably a bit of a stretch.

Thanks all.

I don't think delkevic has been around too long but I've been quite happy with the one I have.  For the price it's way better then the mac

Verify that the original copper crush gaskets are fully removed from the exhaust port. It is very common that they are still smashed in there, creating too little room for the flange to be clamped tightly.

There's a number of members who run the Delkevic systems and have favorable reviews of them.

I put Delkevic stainless headers on my '87 cbr1000f in 2006 and did some 80k km since, they're a bit yellowed now ( never cleaned them) but they are holding up great, and I would have had to replace the originals at least twice in that time.

I looked into ripple rocker, can't justify that much for an exhaust at this moment.

Rob - no rust or other corrosion? Would the yellow come out if you cleaned them properly or is that just  natural consequence of the heat cycle of the headers?

I'll second the Ripple Rock!  It's on my list and they were prompt to reply a couple months ago with my inquiry.  Remember the Canadian vs US Dollar exchange rate can save you money.  Wink wink!

Here in Holland we call stainless steel RVS, Roest Vrij Staal or fust free steel, and it does what the name promises ;D

Stainless steel won't rust due to its properties but wherever its welded it can if the filler used is not also stainless and/or if the backside of the weld was not purged during the process.

The coloring is inherent to stainless because it's inability to dissipate heat efficiently. It will come "clean" if polished with a stainless brush and some cleanser (if badly colored). But expect some amount of gold-blue where the pipe gets hottest for prolonged time.

+1 for Ripple Rock/Hindle exhaust

AND

+1 for Delkevic.

My pipes have turned gold, but that's what you get with stainless. Look beautiful.
