Raping of the Tooth Fairies
« on: January 07, 2007, 08:27:14 PM »
I'm just putting this topic up because I am a coward when it comes to visiting the Dentist. I have not been for many years as they scare the crap out of me...someone coming at you with a big drill spinning at 5 million rpm and grinding your teeth to powder then sucking the residue from the back of your throat, and talking BS to you at the same time....

I made an appointment today as inevitably one has to every few years or so............

Well I knew prices have gone up but I wasn't prepared for a raping by the surgery........

Fill in your details please........life history completed.............sign the waiver........completed..........agree to give your life savings little though they are...........sign again........... if you default we will send the debt collectors on you straight away and will charge you 100% on top of your cost to do this........no cheques business or private accepted.........no credit cards......must be paid BEFORE they let you in the door...........IN CASH please........Oh you don''t have health insurance....looks down nose at you.......OK OK OK.....heres my wallet....take everything but please fix my tooth.........of course sir.....come this way

the man with the mask appears..............hhmmmmmmm........we need a full mouth x-ray......no I don't I want one tooth fixed/extracted please............oh well I think we can do just one..............click...........hhmmmmmmmmm..............we have to schedule you for a surgical extraction..........why...........I don't want to do it now because I wany my anaesthitist mate to be here so he can rape your wallet as well...............just make your next appointment on the way out.....heres a script for pain killers..................thank you sir today is $90.00..............CASH........

Receptionist then makes appointment and advises again no cheques, CASH up front for the anaesthitist $350.00 please...sorry not enough money on me now.......sir will have to pay BEFORE the appointment.........FU...I think.........sir will need to find somehow to also pay another $350 for the surgical extraction.........FU again..........I thnk some more.........

This took a total of 15 minutes, back at work now and cold sweats returning - must ring wife with the good news - I just paid $90.00 to be told to come back and pay another $700.00.......I wonder if she will understand my fear of dentists......

Just for the hell of it--- ring up another local dentist.....friendly answer on phone - oh yes we do that extractions ok ...prices $120 ..maximum $160......- no consultation fee......just use local anaesthetic...dose me up I'm coming now.....

I reaally hate dentists.........come on false teeth.........

I know it's harsh but DON'T go for the false teath option. Budget, save, do what you have to do to get your mouth 100%

I never liked them either, I was traumatized when a youngun. :)

But a few years ago I had to have a wisdom tooth cut out.
Went to the local dentist, he said "I can give it a try for $50" or
"you can go to a specialist for $350".

I went for the $50 because I had heard this Dentist was pretty good.
He was! Cut it right out.

I am a dentist fellas. I see all kinds of things and all kinds of different patients on a daily basis. I see children that sit there and act like adults and adults that act like children- thankfully the latter are few and far between. as far as extractions (pulling teeth) if you go to an oral surgeon the price will be more than if you see a general dentist. If a general dentist believes that the tooth will be extracted without any complications then that is generally the way to go. To address the general fear to the dentist I can only say that you meet all kinds in all walks of like and if you have had a bad experience or you feel that your dentist is insensitive to your pain find someone you like better. They are out there. My last bit of advice is to not wait till it hurts like hell. If you take care of things when they are small the outcome is more pleasant, cheaper, and usually a better end result.

I can vouch for that. I "thought" I was brushing, etc. regularly. Trouble is, the way they taught folks years ago was all wrong. Finally got taught the correct way and no problems since. It's as much the gums as it is the teeth. Keep smiling.  ;D

Just think if I put that money into my bike... damn it would be like done..

I am not a fan of the dentist either.
I would rather get a tattoo then go their.
Last time I didn't go for 5 or 6 years.
When I finally forced myself to go, I had 9 cavities  :-\
I go every 6 months now to avoid what happened before  ::)

I once had a dentist forget to give me novicane before filling in a cavity. At one point, when he stopped drilling I told him that he forgot to numb me. Then he said, "Hmm, sorry about that. Well we're done". It really wasn't that bad. Since then I refuse novicane before fillings. I think the pain of the shot hurts more than the drilling.

I leave permanent fingerprints in the arm of my chair if someone with a white coat walks in the room.  I discovered these little bow kind of things with a mini handle and floss strung across.  Gentlemen- flossing is IT.  Now I do it while watching TV.  My hands are too big otherwise, but these little things are the way to go.  No more cavities.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Despite having had some pretty horrible dental experiences as a kid (in England, in the days when they gassed you to do an extraction) I actually am happy to go twice a year, or whenever he suggests.

I like having the soft parts of the hygenist pressed into the side of my face as she does her thing.

Having a dental plan helps.

I have teeth like ROCKS! I once went 15 years (of couse I'm neurotic about brushing) without going to a dentist. I had plaque that showed up on x-rays, but no cavities! After that, I happily went every 6 months, the dentist was a friend of mine, we'd yack like old ladies and he never had to do anything.
Then one day, a filling fell out. I went in, and he refilled it, no problem...BUT HE DID IT WRONG...and in about 9 months, pressure from the filling broke off a sliver of the tooth...it doesn't hurt, I'm very careful about keeping it clean...so I go back to the dentist...since my last appointment, he's sold his practice, and moved to Arizona! The new guy is a young punk, and told me that he could fix it for a couple hundred bucks, but I have two top wisdom teeth that needed to come out first...bear in mind that these teeth, unlike most other people's came in straight and uncramped just like the others...they're in very healthy condition...but he said I had to go to an oral surgeon to have them removed...I called the oral surgeon, and they wanted another 800.00 to remove them!
It's been 4 years, and I still haven't gotten it fixed. What ever happened to dentists who just do what needs to be done?

That would be attorneys. Every Dentist- Physician- etc etc. will refer to a specialist if there is any chance of complication. No one wants to get sued.

How much of a dentists' fees are due to insurance increases?

My wife goes to a dentist that is More expensive than the locals
because she likes his business sense, ie only does work that she
can afford/is totally necessary. The locals both try to get you on
a "plan of action" that usually costs $1,000's, BUT they take Visa/Mastercard ;D

Not sure. As far as treatment plans all regular patients are given treatment plans. Some need no more than a regular cleaning. Some need restorations on most all teeth. It has a lot to do with previous care or neglect. I only explain what it will take to keep their teeth and then let them decide if the want to do it. It is like most everything else in life- an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.
