Hey Mike...or other CR Carb Guru's.  Looks like carb#4 is indeed missing a "plug".  The CR Carb Diagram shows this as an "Air Leak Jet" I pulled the one from another carb and it appears to just be a solid plug. #85 in this diagram....http://www.sudco.com/images/CR.gif

I was thinking that maybe it fell out while cleaning, but I went to my original disassembly pictures and can see it's missing right from the get go.

Looks like it goes straight down to the throat of the carb. Not sure what effect this would have had on the running (if any)

Thoughts?

Joe

That is strange Joe, I never had the carbs apart.  Check your shop floor.

Hi Art...thats what i thought as well....was looking back at the pictures from when I took them apart, but just cant tell. Doesn't matter as it's gone regardless  ;D

What I would love to know is what is the purpose of that "Jet" being there.  Especially because these are just blanks with no opening so essentially just a plug.  Best thought I have is to buy a starter jet which is the same dimensions and fill it with JB weld to make a plug out of it.

Got the original Regulator and Rectifier pulled off and replaced with a Ricks Li-Ion Safe R/R Combo.  Used a threaded insert rivet tool to make a mount for the R/R.  Pretty pleased how it turned out.  Just need to decide where to mount the small fusebox.

I'm thinking of just mounting with the R/R (see pic)....does anyone see any negatives to this?

Back into the garage finally.  Had a long stint with back to back work travel which made it difficult to do anything on the bikes :(  Got the CR29s all cleaned up and mounted with new throttle cables installed.

I took this next week off to take a vacation in my workshop.  Hoping to get the Tires/Tubes replaced and have everything buttoned up for a local bike event on June 2nd. So more updates soon.

Anyway...here's a video  https://photos.app.goo.gl/7jlzMx0VufDIBB9y2

Hey Ron,  I believe it's the same event as what used to happen down on Illinois Street by the Melody Inn.  Used to be called the Rockers Reunion.....but I think its being managed differently now.  Been held in Fountain Square for the last few years.  Usually a good time..tons of bikes.

Not a Ton of info online, but you'll get the gist.  It's great because they basically close off Virginia, Shelby, etc and block the whole square off for bikes and vendors.

So I'm trying to decide about fuel flow to the CR29s.   The tank currently has a New OEM style dual output petcock with the standard 5.5mm (ish) fuel line.  The Fuel inlet on the CR29s appears to be an 8mm (ish) inlet.

I'm trying to decide if I'm good just plugging one of the outputs of the petcock and running a single line to the carbs, or if I should get a Y-Adapter to merge the two smaller diameter lines into a single 8mm line?

Thoughts?

Hi Joe: I had Phaedrus I plumbed with the 2 spigot tap to the CR29s. Used a T and had fuel line everywhere but it worked. Phaedrus II has a single nipple tap, and I used an in line reducer to get the hoses to work. Its a straight shot from the tap to the nipple on the carb ( a little underslung curve. The line goes up into the carb).

So you could close off one, and do the straight shot routine. But you wont have a functioning reserve, I don't think, unless you use both nips on  the tap.

Hi Ron...I haven't verified physically yet as I dont have fuel in tank at the moment, but I dont think the output is one for main and one for reserve.  I think Fuel flows through both at same time.  If this is the case and I can plug one to simplify fuel line routing that would be great. I just wondered if a single 1/4" outlet flowed enough.

EDIT:  Verified that the dual outlet is truly that...fuel flows from both at the same time.

Yes that's true, to a point. One of the two has a standpipe. When the fuel level gets down to there, it stops drawing. Then, you turn the lever to Res, and all the fuel comes out of the remaining nipple. If you plug that one to begin with, when the fuel gets to the top of the standpipe, I think you'd be done. Unless the remaining fuel crosses over in the tap to the nipple with the standpipe. But I could be wrong and you've got it there to check.

I've got news about Phaedrus's engine. Update on its way, yay!

Frustrating day...The bike was running 2 days ago, but I needed to do an oil change.   All I did was drain the oil tank/sump and replaced the filter.  This has a spin on filter and oil cooler.

Filled the tank with 3 quarts of oil and kicked it over 10 or so times.  Then started the bike.  Ran pretty rough, then noticed the carbs were dripping out the filters/overflows.  Bah!  pretty sure I flooded the engine  >:(   I drained the oil out of the sump and didn't see any gas in it, so it wasn't much but the pugs were quite wet.  added more oil to replace what I drained out of the sump.

So I pulled all the pugs and let it sit for a half hour or so.  It just wont start....I cranked it quite a bit.  At this point I'm going to just walk away and let the battery charge.  I'll take a look again in the morning.

For some reason it didn't occur to me...but when using a remote fuel tank...is it bad to have it hang a couple feet above the bike?  should it hang lower more level with the standard tank position?

Joe

Sorry about the flooding. My VM29s are real sensitive to how much choke I give them.

Don;t think the elevation of the umb tank should make a dif. The few times I've used mine, it was shoulder level or higher.

Yeah...just frustrating.  I'll pull the carbs back off if i have to, but hopefully I'll come back tomorrow and all will be well (like magic).  At first I was worried oil wasn't moving around properly, but I pulled the tappet covers and fresh oil was present on the top end....so at least there's that.

Looking forward to hearing the news on Phaedrus....progress I hope!

Was this with the ignition off? Carbs don't know or care if there's no spark; they feed the fuel when the motor turns. ;)
Ron, I'm also waiting for an update on Phaedrus ..

Yep...ignition off..was just kicking to move oil around.  Probably didn’t help, but carb overflow was obviously it’s own problem.  Guessing I’ll have to pull them again to check floats

So I'm going later today to pick up a new set of plugs.  Pulled the pugs again for a closer look and they all are fully carbon fouled (not oily).  The plugs installed right now are NGK DR9EA.  The bike has Dyna 2000 with 3.0ohm Coils and 7mm Suppression wires.

This caught my attention because I thought you should not use Resistor Plugs or Caps with Suppression wires.  I cant say I'm super educated on the subject though so need to do some reading/learning.

I think the 8's are indeed stock and the 9s are colder.  I'm having to learn about the proper setup of this bike compared to stock though with all the Hi Performance parts and engine work.  I'm all ears to suggestions on proper plugs to use with this bikes setup (see first post for all the mods).

Success for now.  I couldn't find any DR9EAs at the local shops (ordered some in) but they had the DR8EA so I went ahead and installed them.  I drained the carb bowls just in case there was a bit of grit or something blocking the float needles and causing the overflow.  All seems good now with no overflowing....will monitor closely.   Need to determine if I need to use the 8's or 9's with this engine.  I'll have both sets of plugs on hand for testing.

Bike fired right up and seemed to idle well.  Brought to operating temp and checked oil level.  All good.  Moving on for now.

Here's what the old plugs looked like when I pulled them...one on the far right is clearer because I brushed it off.
