Clutch Basket Nut
« on: July 13, 2018, 05:19:13 AM »
First rebuild. Using Mark Paris’s book, the shop manual and YouTube videos I mistakenly opened the engine case before taking off the clutch basket nut. Jumping between too many resources. Now the engine case is completely empty.

I’ve read that jamming a towel in the case and closing it and bolting it down works, but was unable to have any success. Looking to get the transmission to be in gear, but not sure all what needs to go back in. I added in the crank shaft, but the clutch still spins freely, which seems like the obvious result now. Maybe adding in the countershaft ? Maybe the drive shaft? Maybe the shifter assembly?

The transmission would “bounce” out of second and go back into neutral when I was riding it last. The clutch lifter plate was broke. And I have a replacement. Not sure if that was what was causing the issue, but want to address it now with the engine apart.

Trying to remember here :)

One way is to use impact gun.

I would probably use the primary chain to stop it from spinning.  The crankshaft back in, primary chain in and put a piece of wood in the chain to stop it.

Close case temporarily, front sprocket on, 5th gear in , piece of wood in front of the sprocket. Now release the nut with correct tool.

This is essier when engine is in bike with chain on. 5th gear, block the wheel with stuff blocking rhe tire. Not thru the wheel

PeWe-
Ok so, shifted fork drum goes in, forks, countershaft, drive shaft. I don’t have to assemble the shifter assembly right? And, I should be able to leave out the crankshaft and primary chains right? I bought a new front sprocket, so using a board on the old one seems perfect. Might wrap the board in cloth to avoid damaging the case. That’s the idea to jam it against the teeth of the front sprocket and the back side of the engine case right?

The other idea I had after reading 70cb750’s response is to zip tie the primary chain to itself in the middle in several spots. I have some big zip ties. I have replacement primary chains too.

Thoughts? Which option should I try first? Maybe I should take a poll.

Impact will take it right off.

Ok, so primary chain being zip tied does not stop the inside of the basket from spinning. Binds up the primary driven sprocket real well. But the basket can still spin.  So that didn’t work.

The next thing I tried was the impact driver. I had purchased a Vessel JIS manual impact driver. So I hadn’t tried a electric one. After reading Przjohn’s post I stopped by Lowe’s. Jammed the towels back in, with the mainshaft by itself and ran the electric impact driver for about two minutes straight. Worked great.

I did start down the path of reinstalling the countershaft. Was trying to get the ball bearing back in and was using the wooden end of a hammer to drive it in. Hitting it with a second hammer. I feel like I got the center of the bearing a few times.  It occurred to me this might have been dumb. Planning on using a wood block next time. Do I need to purchase a new ball bearing?

Hate to spend more money on the project if it’ll be ok.
