Simple wiring diagram
« on: September 03, 2018, 05:35:29 PM »
Hi. Recently picked up a ‘76 cb400f. The PO converted it to a cafe look - no turn signals, no warning lights, after market controls. The way it’s set up now is that a toggle switch under the seat provides electric to be able to kick it over - no key necessary. The key switch powers on the lights, nothing else. The starter button does nothing (kick only bike). Clearly, not the best set up. I’d like to make it so the key powers the bike up and is needed to either kick it over or use the starter motor (the starter motor is operational because if I touch the loose end of the wire from it to the pos batery terminal it turns). I believe it should just be tracing the wires and having the proper connections / switches in between - everything is there and works. Can someone give me a simple wiring diagram for these components? Thanks.

Oh, also, the ‘off’ button on the handlebar controls (after market, again) works so it seems to me there is just a few wires out of whack. Also, for what it’s worth, the bike runs great. Thanks.

Buy a factory service manual. It will have the proper schematic and you will be able to see if the PO hacked it up and it’s safe.

Coupled with the above, try this:

CB750 K1 - The less, said the better!
CB450 K1 - Stalled.

If you are, Electrically Challenged" these mods, or rather returning the bike to stock will be a challenge but can be done with some patience, and a few dollars. I believe you can buy a replica wiring harness for that bike and it would be a good investment as a place to start. If the PO was a hack, (there are a ton of Electrical Hack Jobs out there)  the original harness may be a rat's nest and it can drive you crazy looking for problems. A new harness will make your job easier. You may also need a starter solenoid, hand controls, and other parts as well. Posting pics of things you have questions about will help people on here help you better.

About the simplest wiring diagram is an interactive 'live wiring' shown by Old Man Honda, where you switch on and off the circuits, so you can study these isolated: http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring350F.html

Thanks, guys.
No intention of bringing it back to stock - once I get this issue figured out I plan to remove all the wires no longer needed (but there, in a rat’s nest). I’ll post some pics if I need further h love (when I need further help...)

Yeah. Don’t know why the pic came up backwards. And apologies for the typos...
