Topic: My '71 CB750 project

So it begins, yesterday I took the plunge and became one of the cool kids when I bought this beauty. On the advice of a couple friends they recommended I start a project thread here.
Overview to start, the engine is pristine. Turns fine, shifts through the gears perfectly. Carbs are in need of a clean and a sync so that's what I'm tackling first since it's cold as hell in the garage I'm using.
As far as what it needs, so far a new exhaust, I'm thinking a 4 into 1 but not decided yet, an airbox, new headlight, grips/throttle. I'd like to put new gauges as the current ones are bare bones with no indicator lights (any advice here would be much appreciated). I may change some things down the road but first things first to get her running well.

Happy for any advice/help I can get, total newbie to sohc and older bikes in general so I'm sure I'll be one here quite a bit.

Looks like a Superglide fork.
 If you find a stock fork... there is one in 4 sale right now, you can run later more common  gauges and the handlebar clamp with the indicator lights in it.
 Because of your forkswap, you have to check to see what bearing races where used,  and check the front end length of any fork you buy..

Fork is from an fxr. Guy I bought the bike from does have a cb750 set of forks. Said he would do an even trade for them. Is it worth the time and effort? How difficult is it to switch them out?

I'm not sure what advantage there is, if any, to the FXR fork swap.  It might be more rigid but it may change the geometry of the bike (if the forks are longer, shorter or have a different offset).  Obviously, if you are trying to bring the bike back to stock, you would want to swap to the original.  If you want a more modern fork upgrade, there are lots of options out there.

When you say races what do you mean exactly? Like the bearings themselves? I think I'm going to swap for the originals just so I know what I have and dont have to be researching two different bikes. Maybe I'll do aftermarket at some point but for now as long as the originals are in good shape (waiting to see them in person before I do the trade) I'm going to go for those.

 Stock is 37 ball and 2 sets of races , some convert to tapered roller bearings.
 Your front end did not drop on,  either stem  or bearings are modified or changed , HD stock is a 1 inch bore  tapered roller  top and bottom.
 The Honda tapered conversion, is not the bearings by the numbers on them. One or more pieces have the od or Id  ground to a non standard size.

Ah I gotcha. I did some research, I'm probably going to get the front end from him and switch over to tapered. Anyone have a good source for step by step swapping out front end? I've watched a bunch of different videos and read a lot about the separate parts of it but if theres one cohesive piece on it that would be awesome.

So I've gotten the new front end, I'm switching to tapered bearings. Having some trouble getting out the bottom race out of the tube but I'm getting there, just need some time to devote to it. Carbs are finally done. Going to clean up the front end, change the oil, check the seals, then it's on to electrical.
