getting ready to reassemble front forks (cb400f)
« on: November 10, 2018, 02:32:43 PM »
The clymers calls for 10/30 oil 5.4 ozs. per leg.

I've  got some 15 weight Belray fork oil, on the shelf.

After doing a search of this site, it looks like 5 weight might be prefered ?

Soooo is it worth a trip into town, for some 5,

or will the 15, do just fine ?

Unless you're going to be riding your bike at the limits of its performance I don't think it matters greatly, provided you put exactly the same quantity of exactly the same weight oil in both sides.

It's a bit is a bit like wondering whether your granny will perform better in Adidas or Nike running shoes.

The factory service manual (in the "library" here, you should download it all) specifies "any brand of automatic transmission fluid" for the front forks.
That is NOT 10W30 motor oil, Mr. Clymer! 10W is roughly the viscosity of most ATF and multigrade oil will maybe hold viscosity if the forks get hot... I have never felt the forks hot after riding that exercised the forks vigorously, though.
I use bike shop fork oil: 10W feels OK but I mix in some (~1/4) 15W - I'm pretty heavy.
