Tank and gauges, side covers and bars all demolished by angry ex with a board. Clean title, motor stuck. Sat outside eight to ten years. Why do I want this!?!?!?

You could make money on the titled frame and the carbs. If it's a 77-78 the valve cover alone is worth $75-$100. If you're willing to part it out then it is probably worth the $100.

Why are the valve covers on those years anything special?

The rockers on the 500 and 550 ride on shafts located in the cover. Through '76 those rocker shafts floated and over time the would rotate eventually causing their bores to oval so that the valve clearances can't be set.

In '77 Honda revised the setup and added pins that keep the shafts from rotating. Lots of older high mileage 500's and 550's suffer from wear and there isn't any simple way to fix the issue, so the improved covers can command a premium.

if the tank lid and hardware are still intact, there's another $20+ to some one looking for these hard to find parts.
for the later 750's...not the valve cover per se, but the cam is the good goods.  if the whole head is intact(no broken fins) theres another $50+
$50 easy money for a set of PD carbs...
$$ for the seat pan, latch

The front rack is neat.
Why is the cam special?
If the float pin towers look anything like the rest of this thing, they're parts carbs.
I do, however, love a challenge!

 Pretty sweet, I saw one that was leaned on a leaky tractor tire full of Chloride. Now that was a rusty pig. The guy got a hundred for it and took payments.  I later made the new owner a deal on some average condition wheels.

The bike on my profile ( my 1st 750 ) was owned by my friend Vinny's father . His wife took a hammer to the tank and gauges . Purchased the bike and it sat for 30 years ( too many projects ) and my son and i did a complete rebuild , good times . Almost finished with my 2nd 750 ( 76 SS ) with a 78F waiting in the wings ( and a 400t ) .

If it wasn't for Vinny's crazy mom i probably would of never been bitten by the SOHC bug.

Vinny use to take some rather racy pics of his girlfriend April handcuffed to the bike  >=  ( see what i did there , lol ) , so it has a provenance  !  I guess we can call it " The Bondage Bike 2 " .

So,,I went to have a look at the title for this bike and the guy can't find it. Assuming that it is actually in his name, it will cost $95 for a new one. He did go down to $75 but says he'll let it rot rather than take $50!
$170 to rescue this poor thing! I dunno about that! Plugs are probably frozen in the head, and the exhaust studs and bolts are amalgamated. Around here it's very humid so I'm thinking full rebuild for the top end if it will come apart without breaking. Why do I still consider it? HELP! I already have four street bikes.  None of them are customized, though. 
This is a bad deal, right?

 I just passed along a cheap 78F to a member in Quincy. I already have more bikes than space but somebody needs to save them.
