Good read! If you think about it, those guys sitting inside a can on top of a bomb that was set for a long drawn out explosion, had to be either stone cold brave  or nuking futs!

Excellent read. Taking a vacation mid January which includes a 2 day visit to Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. Spent a lot of time in the 60's watching launches and was tuned into the NASA program as a kid. Looking forward to visiting the exhibits and tours.

Thanks for sharing that. I had a scrapbook with clippings from the X1 to the X15 with Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield and all of it leading up to the Moon program. One day I decided I was too grown up for such things, I tossed that and my comic books. Dumb.  I'm not so grown up these days. I finally got the 70 cb750 I wanted for graduation, I still have my slot cars and 69 firebird.

I was watching a NOVA special on it and one of the computer design engineers that designed the guidance computer for 8 let her daughter play with a copy and crashed it. She guided her through the steps she did to crash it and tried to make sure the astronauts did not do the 'P 01' sequence.
Lovell accidentally entered it in after the final return burn (luckily) when he was calibrating against an astrosextant and the computer thought it was on the launching pad at Canaveral. The craft started pitching in wacky directions and they finally straightened it out for the final approach.

Imagine if that had done that anytime before moon escape burn...  :o

From the moment a Saturn V rocket launched to the moment the capsule splashed down once returning those astronauts inside were 1 step away from disaster at any given moment so yeah they definitely had the "right stuff". What's sad though is that the odds for them to accomplish their mission and safe return were so stacked against them that many people today don't believe it actually happened and was nothing but an elaborate hoax.

My sons Apollo 11 autographed print and his Saturn 5 mahanoney model. Truly a fine display of the technology from the 1960's. Click the print and it opens correctly.

yeah that photo was fantastic!back in the day we never saw films with computer generated scenes etc, fakes were obvious, lotta young uns get brought up on it now and its like ho hum today as a fake would look even better?all the films and games played look so real, but that photo taken on film really makes you think how fragile the earth could be and there aint much of it compared to the rest of the universe?we cant just hop onto another one?it self repairs over time though.

Have you guys seen the picture of Earth, Venus and Jupiter taken from the surface of Mars? That's the most amazing thing I've seen since the Earthrise photo.

When Apollo 8 flew as a 'hail Mary' pass against the Soviet's proposed direct-lift Luna rocket to the moon that same month (which exploded on the pad and killed much of the launch facility's personnel) I was in school on the 'track' to be working in Apollo as an 'Electronics Engineer, Space Technology' from 1964 until the Space program collapsed in 1970. Our school counselors then redirected us to new fields, as for the next 10 years following that, electronics engineers were a dime-a-dozen. It taught me how to do electronics and power systems all the way down to the atomic (as in, electrons being counted, each) level, so 100% of all of my lifetime [electronic] designs have always been perfect, and I have often been hired to 'fix' those that weren't so good.

I sure wish they still taught that today! The 'kids' I am working with in the Automation Industry (since about 2000 or so) have not the foggiest idea what makes their computers or PLCs even run, outside of the software they deal with. Makes me sad. :(

My dad and his 15-man team worked for Eisenhower from 1954 until they were killed (13 of them) on April 21, 1958, in a mid-air collision between an F-100F and a UAL airliner (UAL736) that was NOT an accident, but was published that way because of the secrecy involved. My dad's team invented Inertial Guidance. It was first deployed in the Thor IRBM in December 1958, neutralizing the Soviet nuke threat: the day they were killed it was being added to the Atlas project. The IG team was the #1 Top-Secret project in the country, reporting only to Eisenhower directly (and my dad met with him several times) and Atlas was #2, also directly under Ike's control and no one else. Ike knew about the deep penetration into our government by the KGB and NKVD, so there was no chain-of-command on those 2 projects.

It wasn't until the Apollo's navigation system's plans were declassified in 1992 that I discovered: they used the same design as was used in the Thor(!). It was miniaturized, but it was the same mechanical system.

I have been writing a book about this whole thing since 1999 and hope to have it done soon. ;)

Get offed over almost 70 year old tech?  ::)
I know the Russkies are probably still incorporating tube tech in their designs but even that is a stretch, dave.

'They' (led by the FBI) tried that in 1976 and again in 1978 with me. I'm still here...and I ended up getting the whole FBI report on the communist attack that killed my dad and 13 of his 15-man team after our little go-arounds. They have left me pretty much alone since then, although from time-to-time they still pop up.

If it is NSA, it is a white Lincoln. If it is FBI it is a black Lincoln or a black Navigator. Lately some of them are using Tahoes, also in black. All of them have US Government plates, white with black letters, and very dark glass. ;)

It is spooky what goes on. Guess that's why we have the term spooks. Saw some of it in Ireland back in the day.
