So Cal trip
« on: January 03, 2019, 01:22:25 AM »
I'm going to the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona and spending the week. Last trip I got to see Joshua tree park and a little desert. I spent a couple days at the beach at Carlsbad the trip before but the surf hotel is gone now. We'll be staying in Ontario since it's close and I'm a little familiar with the area.  Aside from the NHRA and Petersen museums any suggestions on places to visit?

Nothing useful probably but every time we used to go to Covina I'd hit all the vinyards that had tasting rooms and at the time there was a few.

I had a great time at Venice Beach on one of my trips to Cali.   We got wild at the Outback Shak!

Touch base with Don [caferacerfan], he lives in that area...

A trip up the Palm Springs tram is cool. It goes almost straight up from the desert to the Forrest at the top of the mountain.  The gondola rotates as it rises and gives some cool views. Plus you can eat at the top and go on several shout hikes.

Depending on what you want to spend a trip ticket Catalina island is a good day trip.

If the winds are coming in off the ocean towards the bluffs just below Carlsbad is a little place called Dave's Beach and guys fly RC slope gliders there. It is entertaining way to spend some time if you want to enjoy a little sun. Torre Pines down just north of San Diego has a glider port and they fly a hang gliders and they will also fly bigger slope and scale gliders there. So, if you find yourself down near San Diego there is the Carousel and Zoo and there is a small aircraft museum. San Diego has a nice small art museum too.

Chino if you like warplanes has an excellent aircraft collection of WWII and post war aircraft and some jets with lots of guys wintering their warbirds there...

LA has the Tar Pits downtown and lots of other things if you like city stuff. Tower Records if still in business is pretty cool bit of history to it.

David- back in the desert SW!

Demon78,

Is Covina near Napa's Oak Knoll district, Wagner family of Wines ?
Wife's uncle had farm north of Sacramento. Took the wife down Hwy 1, giant sequoias, etc the year before he passed. Still a beautiful place, excepting the homeless situation around the large cities. If I lived any where Wagner's Caymus or Emmolo brands were free to sample, I'd have a problem.

Tracks......

No Covina is in So California by Pomona and San Dimas. There are just a few winery's left  but they are more for show than anything else. Most of the Vinyard are Comercial buildings now. Garber olives are in Upland, but it doesn't take long to visit the store. All or most of the Vinyards were close to Ontario airport and Upland / Cucamonga.

The Napa area is still very nice though.

Speaking of Covina, I was there in the late70,s at a place called Rubel Pharms, very cool place.
A former Citrus plantation  I think the farm building area us still going.
Looked it up online a few years back, the guy we met back then, and showed us around is running it .
I heard at the time it was a big citrus growing  area.
I just checked there is z castle there and it's in Glendora I think beside Covina

The tarpits would be something to see. we'll be staying in Ontario. Really close to Pomona. With the TSA and ATC guys calling in sick my wife may let me drive. That's add another several days but I can see the giant ball of twine.
My friend in Escondido wants to show us San Diego at night.

Some of the BEST Mexican food places are in old town, fresh made right there tortillas and great food!

You can take ship tours at the harbor too, plus on the way down there you go right past Miramar Naval air station, might be able to cop a tour there also.

I don't know if the season is started then  but Perris has sprint cars on the dirt oval, always a good show. Plus they open the pits to everybody when the racing is over and almost all the drivers and cars stick around.

Not too far from Pomona (a few miles west)  is a little town called DUARTE.  The Justice Beothers have a small museum with Indy and drag race cars in it.   For a fun day trip, rent a moto from EagleRider and head up to SOLVANG just past Santa Barbara. There is a great vintage moto collection on display there but they have weird hours so check ahead. I can give you a GREAT route that gets you there “the back way” from Ontario (weather permitting).

Jgg,

The best Mexican food place, put a smile on my face and reminded me of panic at 43,000 ft.

Eat some ice cream, try to be near a cast iron bathtub so you can sit on the rim and keep scooting around looking for the cool spot?

Temecula is right down the 15 and lots of wineries. Joshua Tree may or may not be open because of the gov't shut down. People are trashing the place - cutting down the trees so they can go off-roading where they shouldn't be.

Lake Elsinore is kind of cute. San Diego is better - I love that town. If you get the chance just N of San Diego is Encinitas/Del Mar - my preferred stomping grounds when in the area.

Hell, you're not far from my Town - Seal Beach. Give me a call. I'll buy you and your fam a beer at the local pub. It's a cute little beach village.

Gene, if you talk Don into  going to Seal Beach try Walt's warf for sea food if they are still there, used to be really good.

Awesome, Seal beach and Walt's Wharf are now on my list. Thanks Gene I'll keep it in mind.
I made it to Joshua tree a couple years ago when I rode out to Pomona with a buddy but we only had a week, drove out from Illinois in two days, stayed two days at the races and three days going home.
I was surprised to see antique desert tin cans on the ground. I didn't think I should pick them up. We were looking at the cacti and climbing on rocks. Real rock climbers just stood there and looked at us waiting to see if we were going to need assistance.

damned straight. Never trust a joint that doesn't make their own tortillas OR at least gets them from a reputable tortillaria!

Done deal, we fly Tuesday morning to Ontario and come home the next week on Wed.  Sat and Sun at Pomona, at some point,  maybe Friday we're going to San Diego with friends from Escondido, Probably Carlsbad, Oceanside etc. The Petersen museum and snoop around the desert a little.

Don, I don't know if it is still there but there used to be a really good steak house in Glendora called Pinnacle Peak. It is one of those places where if you wear a tie, they cut it off and pin it to the wall. The food was really good, but I haven't been up that way in years.

Also for some killer pastrami if you get a chance to go to a place called the Hat. I know there is one in Fullerton and that is just a short hop down the 57 frwy.

It's supposed to rain here sat, sun, mon, & tues. Weather has been low 60's day and high 40's to low 50's at night. From what you are leaving that is a heat wave!

Have a good and safe trip!

I'd be ok with watching the ocean in the rain at 60* I've only had my feet in salt water a few times but I sure enjoy being there. There's a California guy that's been on here with a sandcast cylinder, I briefly considered putting some trading material in a carry on bag.
