What Kinda Car You Own? (or previously owned?)
« on: January 21, 2007, 06:43:48 AM »
1964 Plymouth Savoy w/ 426 street wedge, pushbutton auto, plain-Jane w/ no options, not even carpet. Dog-dish hubcaps, bench seat, a real sleeper. Had headers dumping into supertrapps, whata rumble. Wish I never sold that puppy. Now I drive a new Ford Freestyle, which is a great car. I used to restore Mopars and Mustangs, good stuff.

      Hey 736,
Man oh man, I hear you talking. I had a buddy with a 64 Sport Fury that had a 426 wedge with a 4sp and a positrac. I have like the 64s since back in 64', ;D 8) Read everything I could get my hands on, about the "Little Red Truck" and went to the dealer when they got one in to check it out. Drove a 69' road runner and the salesman tried his best to trade with me. ;D ::) I told him I just wanted to drive that truck! I couldn't afford $7,000 and wasn't about to trade the 69'. That 66' charger has memories for me too.
Now I have an 06' Dodge Gran Caravan SXT, a 94' Plymouth Grand Voyager LE and an 80' Honda Accord.
Have had 56' Plymouth Savoy, 58' Chevy Impala (348 powerglide), Red 66' Dodge Charger (383,4sp,posi), Petty Blue 69' road runner, Gold w/ a white top 69' road runner (married the girl who had it & the cars were how we met), Blue 66' Charger (383,torqueflite), 73' VW "The Thing", 76' Plymouth Volare road runner, 84' Plymouth Turismo 2.2 (5sp), 70' VW bug, 74' Dodge Royal Monaco (ex-state police car 440 interceptor), 93' Dodge Grand Caravan "Sport Wagon", White 93' Dodge Grand Caravan LE and a 99' Dodge 1500 Conversion Van (360).
This all has been from 1966 until now.
                                                Later on, Bill :) ;)

first car: 1981 Pontiac Grand Prix w/ Trans Am 403
other fun cars i've owned but, no longer own (motorcycles only for the past year):
1980 Firebird w/ pneumatic rear shocks to allow for the 18" wide rear goodyear eagles
1991 Firebird
1990 Taurus SHO... best car i've ever owned and the super high output engine was yamaha's gift to a struggling ford
1973 Jeep J20... TOUGHEST gas guzzler ever made

There have been about 20 other cars/trucks/motorcycles but, you only need to know the "cars of interest"  :)

1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ
1973 MGB/GT

They were both cool -- for cars. The MG was fun to wrench on, and despite the car's reputation, I never had any electrical problems. I still have a set of SU carbs that I am considering putting on my fiancee's BMW motorcycle.

Those are the only two cars I've ever owned. I much prefer motorcycles.

Never anything special...

In Texas, I had a Mercury Capri with a small 6 in it.  It was a pocket rocket.  Got it as a former rental car.  Never saw one quite like it on the regular market.  It was a sort of Rallye equipped vehicle.  Even with the automatic it would leave rubber at a stop light (yes, I was immature enough to try it a few times...).  That car just made it to 100,000 miles.

Replaced that with a Mazda MX-6.  Little 4banger motor, LOTS of fun.  I drove it like a Jeep, and it put up with it.  Tore the nose off a few times down in the Big Bend area, but that car took it and asked for more.  When I move up to British Columbia, it took on the dirt mountain rodes like it was made for them.  It was well worn (beaten up, actually) when I gave it over to a desperate HS kid at about 200,000 miles.

Next came a Nissan Maxima.  The only car my dear, departed Dad bought brand new.  He gave it to us to replace the Mazda, since he'd had a stroke and couldn't drive anymore.  Fast on the highway, handled well, very comfortable, but a relative gas-guzzler.  I totalled it on a snowy mountain road one morning early, coming back from an all-night SAR mission.  Fell asleep at the wheel, and came to when the car was airborne heading for a canyon wall.  Totalled the car, but it protected me completely!

Now have a 2000 Subarau Outback (Legacy) wagon.  Gets me and the dogs and gear whereever we have to go.  Can take all of our flight medical gear and crew.  A little underpowered with the 4banger motor, but it gets good mileage.  Standard 5 speed.  It's been pretty well worn on the forest roads around here.  I really like the all-wheel drive.  We're looking for a Subaru for the wife now.  I bought it with our dogs in mind.  I've had 4 searchers and dogs and gear crammed into it, and it still pulled us all up a snowy dirt road!

The wife has a 94 Toyota no-name truck.  2 wheel drive, rear wheels at that.  Came with no passenger side mirror, no radio, no cigarette lighter.  4banger, 5 speed.  We put a cap on it, and she loves it; but it's time for something better for the varying conditions around here.  Still, we're amazed how well that tough, stripped little truck has served us.  I doubt we can get much on trade in, so we just might keep it for hauling stuff.

Never had my own car as a kid.  Dad wouldn't sign for a driver's license when I was 16, 'cause I was too much trouble and goofing off in school.  When I moved to Israel at 18, I didn't really need a car, because public transport is so good and gets you anywhere.

Hey Spiderman - I've got a MGBGT too! 1970 model. Plus currently a '71 Rover P6B, and soon to arrive in my garage a '69 Mini Cooper S. Had other MG's, Mini's, even a Fiat (what was I thinking?), but for about 20 years of my life had nothing but bikes.
There's something about the 70s for me - must have left a big impression on me!  ;D

Cars come and go ... my current ride is a '06 Crown Victoria chosen for it's bullet proof reliability, safety and dirt cheap insurance rates. The Buick Grand National was the only exciting car I ever owned.

Cheapo- I'd love to see a picture of that '71 MGA !

My first was an MGA Coupe-
Ford Falcon Van
51 Dodge I bought because the trunk was full of walnuts
Morris Minor Traveler
TR3
54 Chevy Belaire
54 Citroen
TR3 again
66 Volvo station wagon; sanitised, painted Didge truck grey, small blue/purple/pink ghost flames, burgundy interior, full
Moons, and a sprinkle of fairy dust under the hood.
Another Morris Minor Traveller with front disk conversion and 1275 engine, among other mods.
Now it's a basic MGB- I mean Miata

            Hey Uncle,
If you painted that Morris Minor Black and changed the interior to Red, my Dad had one just like that when I was in High School, I wanted that car soooo baddd and he sold it to somebody when I went into the USAF in 66'. I put lots of miles on that Morris and had a blast doing it. Thanks for posting it. 8) ;)

MGs are great, underappreciated cars! My dad always had 'em, and he still has the 1953 TD he bought second-hand in 1960. It still runs great.

The BGT sure handled great.

Modern cars don't do anything for me. I like machines I can understand and work on. (Although I have an inexplicable fascination with the Citroen SM.)

I've got an Isuzu Rodeo for utility use and am currently restoring a '62 Porsche 356B for my "fun car".  It's about as much fun to drive as the old bikes and I can't wait until it gets back on the road.
