replacing coils
« on: February 07, 2019, 07:39:06 PM »
I'm getting ready to replace the coils on my 78 750K. After reading the info about checking and replacing coils my plan is to use the Parts n More coils #17-6823, NGK 0 ohm caps, and NGK DR8ES-L plugs. I think this a good combination to work with the stock points. I was thinking about using the Dyna 3 Green coils but if I read correctly this isn't a good combo for my 78. Am I on the right track or do I need to dig deeper in the forums about coils?

My CB750 K6 use Dyna 5 ohm coils which work fine. My K2 build has a set too. Both have points and Hondaman ign module. I'll start my K2 with points only, Hondaman module after break-in and verification that all electric stuff are OK.

I tested 3 ohm coils with Dyna-S ignition. Battery discharged very quick, Especially with light on which is a must here during daylight. I went back to my local shop where I've boght them and swapped to 5 ohms which work fine.

Dyna coils have one detail to take care of:
The HT lead connections are of auto type, just push the cable in. It can come loose very easy and must be clamped by a strap to frame close to coil. I had got a lead coming out several times and getting intermittent ign failures. The longer on 1 or 4 has more area the wind or a pressure washer can grap and pull out.

The Dyna coils can be fitted on the Honda stock brackets. They take more space than Honda coils so throttle cables are both to be routed on left side of the frame.
NGK 5kohm caps are the most common caps together with Plugs NGK D8EA or Denso X24ES-U. Copper HT leads.

Avoid suppressed Dyna graphite leads. I had long time problems with one lead that had intermittent problems, probably broken inside despite new.
