1972 K2 tank badges
« on: March 19, 2019, 10:43:58 AM »
Looking at DSS site, they show K2 tank badges with a gold finish. An e-mail to them got an answer to the effect that the gold is correct for K2. My K2 and badges from other sources show black on the edges. Which is correct, black or gold edges? Interestingly, a set of badges for the K2 is available on eBay in Honda packaging with only one part number. The bay site claims that in the 80's, Honda dropped the rigid badges that were different numbers for right and left. They then produced flexible badges that could be used on either side and reduced the part to one part number

Black is correct, one part number now does both sides. You actually have to bend one of the emblems to fit correctly. Gold edge is for a 1971 CB750

Tricky to bend badge to fit tank. It will easy bend in a sharp turn. I got it OK after a while.
I think I bought mine from Yamiya, only one model available.

I think I have seen complete K2 set from Germany on eBay.
EDIT: Checked again, only right side available. This not 87122-341-000

You can use both.
The gold edge and the black (skinny) edge.
Don't mix it up with the thick black edge (and white letters). Those are for the k6.

The K2 is unique. The letters were [off]white onto black background letters. The outlines of the letters are plain (metal color), having been sanded off smooth. On most K2, the white paint in the letters cracked and fell out within 2-3 years (like mine!). If I ever find the correct off-white color again, I'm gonna repaint mine: until then they will remain all black, letters outlined in silver metal.

That K2 uniqueness includes the button below the left hand switch unit as well, does it not?

Yes for button.
You need the blinker buzzer for that button. It will make buzzer silent while pressed. My K2 got that with buzzer that will notify me when I have forgotten the blinker on. No need to look for it and lose control over the traffic for a few sec.

The last of the Old Factory K1 and the K2 shared that add-on switch for the beeper-kill. The bottom of the LH switch was apparently flattened, drilled and tapped for the screws, but not for long!

Going back to tank badges, way back when i was doing insurance jobs there were two part numbers, one for each side but most big parts stockists only kept one and you reshaped the badge to fit with care. Also the colour, at least in UK, was superceeded and you could only get the later one but that is from aged memory and cant remember when----remember UK did not get K3,4,5,6 only 2,7 & 8

This happened in the States, too, around 1974. All the badges became one, and it was flat(!) so you had to hand-bend it to fit. Sometimes it had to be painted, too. It wasn't terribly consistent (still isn't?).

In lettering paint, One shot for example, a little gold added to white makes it a nice off white color. A little more gold makes it old looking.
