Scottly, I started skating about 1984.  There were no skateparks.  But even in Michigan, we skated lots of embankments and ditches.  Backyard ramps were a thing but you had to know the right people to skate 'em.  At the time it was a rebellious, underground activity.  By 1987, that all changed for a few years, and then in the 90's all the hype kinda died off only to gradually build up again...seems like skateboarding has become a stable, growing, acceptable sport? now.
If it works good, it looks good...

I got my first board about 20 years before you started, Sean. ;D The next wave came in the '70s and thanks to urethane wheels really took off. 8)

It's in the Olympics, after all. But the bifurcation of skating started in the '90s with the X-Games and the Dew Tour and that stuff, leading to the Maloof Money Cup and Street League (where first place for a weekend of skating was $150,000 -- I DJed the first Maloof Money Cup with some friends). But there has always been the other side -- skating in the streets, pools, ditches, backyard ramps, etc. We (Thrasher) don't cover any of those big contests -- they're on ESPN or whatever -- but just cover raw stuff.

That being said, skateboarding is in a slump period despite its seeming popularity, and the industry is going through a cyclical downturn.

Leaving PHX tomorrow AM. I had a good couple of days seeing friends, skating pools, playing records, and... cleaning up this thing.

I got a POR15 kit and relined the original tank. Decided on the name "Spotted Dick" for the bike based on the spots on the side covers (and I usually don't name my bikes). Adjusted the valve lash. Put in a new air filter. Synced the carbs. Put in a little elbow grease on some of the nuts and bolts to get the surface rust off. A couple more touches -- new rear brake light mount, new turn signals -- and it'll have the chrome bits looking good. The engine shows some age, maybe clean that up a little or throw some paint on it (this isn't a restore project, so just enough to brighten it up a little). Next trip I'll be able to use the original tank (also needs a new cap seal). It runs well, gets me around, and my friends are cool with me leaving it at their place.

Picked up spare carbs for the 550F so as soon as I get back home to CDMX I'll get that thing back up and running (after a broken float tower). Got a few more random parts for the airrbox and stock motor mount hardware.

It's been pretty hot (but only a few degrees above 100!) but still got some work done. Be back in 6 months or so.

They're out there. Scored this one in a parts lot from SF that I got sent to AZ. Pipe is loud, like my 550 was.

Made it back home to CDMX. It is illegal to bring used parts and you are supposed to declare them and potentially pay a fine and/or some kind of import duty. Every time I go to PHX I bring stuff back -- this time a set of carbs and two spare bodies, a petcock, some of the mounting hardware for the airbox and motor mounts. I waited for my bag to come through but... it never did. This means it's either lost or they are flagging it for inspection. They flagged it for inspection, but as usually happens the guy asked me to open up my bag and show him. I explained that I have a bike here, can't get parts, showed him pictures that included the Mexico City license plate, and he said, like all the others have said before him, every time it happens, "It's fine, just don't do it again."

I'll begin carb work tomorrow and hope to have the 550F up and running either tomorrow or Wednesday, rejetted.

I honestly think they're looking for bigger fish to fry. The guy ahead of me was on a flight from Japan and he had a bag completely full of Japanese candy. Raised some eyebrows but he walked through as well.

Started in on the carbs today, although thinking I might get it done in one day was a bit optimistic (I also had a few other things to do, and I am in a swimming marathon so I had to go do a leg of that today as well).

That being said, I am also feeling insanely lucky. I opened up two bowls at Bob's before I bought these, including the one body that has a broken post on my set off the bike. They looked pretty good, but I didn't really look at them up close.

I opened them up here and... someone has rebuilt these, and maybe recently. They are completely spotless inside, bowls and bodies. They have the stock brass, including Keihin #38 and #98 jets. The float bowl o-rings aren't squished in the slightest and are completely flexible. The floats move up and down freely and the float valves operate as they should. All are set the same and correctly (I will clear tube them on the bike). I'm doing a little cleaning of the exterior and the bowls after I realized I don't have much compressed air and carb cleaner around, so that part will come tomorrow. Pretty happy with that score.

Once I clean the passages, I'll put in the Keihin jets I ordered to lean the mixture and I'll move the needle one spot to lean it out. Then I'll mount them and see how it runs. I picked up a few other tidbits for the airbox set up, including some hardware and the drain tube, so I will put those on. I also picked up motor mount hardware -- it's got non-oem that does the job but is a little long. And I've got those Hagons to mount as well...

Agreed.   Flying home from CUN a couple years ago, I was wearing a cool hat made out of a palm frond when I entered U.S customs. I was flagged and brought into a back room. Thought for sure they would seize my new [$20] hat, but she just looked it over and sent me on my way. Bigger fish to fry...

So... yeah. A day or two was a bit too optimistic. Part of it was stuff kept coming up, and my son was sick so I stayed home to take care of him. Part of it was... just other stuff.

But part of it was also the fact that I Wanted to clean up the carbs as well. As I said, they were spotless inside, remarkably so. Took everything out and blew cleaner and compressed air through the passages, completely clean. Someone must have rebuilt these and just never mounted them. Float bowl o-rings were brand new. Jets spotless, valves functioning perfectly, float height spot on (will verify with a clear tube when it's up and running). But they were a little dusty and dull on the outside, so I spent some time cleaning the bodies. I switched over the tops from the other carb set since they were in better shape, but kept the same bowls (and polished them up). Replaced the cable mount and cleaned it up. Replaced a few of the bolts from the other set of carbs, and cleaned them up. The rod that links the carbs has a little rust, did the best I could but it didn't come out perfect -- but nobody can see that with the tank on the bike anyway. Checked the sync -- will redo with the Carbtune when it's up and running. One of the chokes was set slightly off, so I corrected that.

Today I wrestled them in, at least the front end. I had bought a few things to pick up in Phoenix, including new o-rings for the carb-to-engine mounts. I had spotted a little gas-colored discoloration around them, figured I'd throw new o-rings in there just in case. The old ones were dry and stiff as pucks. Didn't get the rear connections to the airbox assembly done, and I took out the air filter box to get a little more room to wiggle the rack in. Tomorrow it'll be getting the carbs mounted in the rear and getting the airbox set up again, then sync and tune up, then experimenting with this set up -- I've got the slightly smaller Keihin jets installed, and will start with a stock air filter, then move to uni-foam after that. I also adjusted the needles one to lean out the mid-range +.

I also puttered around with some other stuff. Mounted the Hagons I bought. They look good, similar to stock, but noticeably beefier side-by-side (although likely not on their own, just on the bike). I replaced the two seals in the tach drive -- there was a little oil around there and that should clean it up. And replaced two of the engine mount bolts. The PO had two ridiculously long bolts where the slightly longer ones should be, one of them standard, the other with a 1.5" spacer. Maybe he had pegs or an engine guard mounted? Dunno. But they are back to stock.

Tomorrow I hope to get everything back in place and fire that thing up.

Got everything together last night. Was happy to find that the miscellaneous hardware I bought included the spacers for the airbox. It took a little wrestling, but everything came together. Put in the stock airbox, and tightened down the snorkel with the butterfly nuts that came with Steve-O's package.

This morning I checked the float bowls for height with a clear tube, and they were right on. Figured I'd crank it over to see if it'd fire. Of course it did. Wasn't satisfied with that, thought I'd just run around the block to see how it ran. Took a minute to warm up and idle, but idled at a smooth 1200. Ran around the neighborhood, smooth so far. Decided that I'd have to get the RPMs up since that is where it was bogging before, so made a quick jaunt over to the ring road (which is 80KPH, but pretty easy to go a little fast. Opened it up and smooth, consistent acceleration. Just went a couple miles and turned around. Saw two cops including a moto cop who came up right behind me and I realized I didn't have my license on me. He sped past, I waited a minute and opened it back up and still accelerating smoothly. I think this is gonna work.

Got back and the idle had jumped a little, so I backed it off. Carb sync tomorrow. And I'll go through a complete tune up again, and check those plugs.

Looks like the stock airbox setup, rejetted and with one needle adjustment, is gonna work at 7500 feet of altitude.

A little too premature, but not a big thing... The carb sync helped, but it just wasn't running as well as it should. I took it out for a couple spins, and the idle was a little rough and it was popping a little at low rpms. Didn't think it could be lean, but I did change the idle jets from 38 to 35. Was that it? Was very rough to start, needed full choke and a long time for me to back off the choke. Must be lean...

I switched them back out for the 38s, and now it is running much better, idling very easily. I have the idle mixture screws out 1.5 turns as per spec, might need to tool around with that depending on how the plugs look. Still need to adjust valves and check points and timing and advance -- my wife's been in Italy with girlfriends and I'm on my own here with my son, so not a ton of free time. Dropped the float bowls and did the switch with the carbs on the bike, there was a little slightly discolored gas in the bottom of the bowls, no silt, no grit, so I'm guessing it's just the first fuel going through those rebuilt carbs.

It also looks like dropping the needle one position -- the only position left to drop with 069As -- was the most important thing. The previous main jets were bigger than stock at 100 and had old o-rings, so bringing them back to 98s with new o-rings helped as well I am sure.

Yep -- and the main jet was back to stock 98 to replace leaky 100s.

Not considering myself out of the woods just yet though. Need to ride it some more and see how it does.

It's smooth past 4k rpm or so, where it was bogging before. It's noticeably a little less peppy than before, but not by much, and not enough to bother me -- assume that's just the power loss at altitude that one would expect if one brought a stock bike from sea level to 7500 feet.

I bet they are having fun being chased by the Italians!

I imagine so! She definitely needed a break and she's with two girlfriends who she did a year abroad with at university in Essex. One is from Argentina, but her family goes back to Italy and they've got a place there, in a town on a lake near Torino. The other friend is newly divorced so I imagine she's loving the attention.
