So... yeah. A day or two was a bit too optimistic. Part of it was stuff kept coming up, and my son was sick so I stayed home to take care of him. Part of it was... just other stuff.
But part of it was also the fact that I Wanted to clean up the carbs as well. As I said, they were spotless inside, remarkably so. Took everything out and blew cleaner and compressed air through the passages, completely clean. Someone must have rebuilt these and just never mounted them. Float bowl o-rings were brand new. Jets spotless, valves functioning perfectly, float height spot on (will verify with a clear tube when it's up and running). But they were a little dusty and dull on the outside, so I spent some time cleaning the bodies. I switched over the tops from the other carb set since they were in better shape, but kept the same bowls (and polished them up). Replaced the cable mount and cleaned it up. Replaced a few of the bolts from the other set of carbs, and cleaned them up. The rod that links the carbs has a little rust, did the best I could but it didn't come out perfect -- but nobody can see that with the tank on the bike anyway. Checked the sync -- will redo with the Carbtune when it's up and running. One of the chokes was set slightly off, so I corrected that.
Today I wrestled them in, at least the front end. I had bought a few things to pick up in Phoenix, including new o-rings for the carb-to-engine mounts. I had spotted a little gas-colored discoloration around them, figured I'd throw new o-rings in there just in case. The old ones were dry and stiff as pucks. Didn't get the rear connections to the airbox assembly done, and I took out the air filter box to get a little more room to wiggle the rack in. Tomorrow it'll be getting the carbs mounted in the rear and getting the airbox set up again, then sync and tune up, then experimenting with this set up -- I've got the slightly smaller Keihin jets installed, and will start with a stock air filter, then move to uni-foam after that. I also adjusted the needles one to lean out the mid-range +.
I also puttered around with some other stuff. Mounted the Hagons I bought. They look good, similar to stock, but noticeably beefier side-by-side (although likely not on their own, just on the bike). I replaced the two seals in the tach drive -- there was a little oil around there and that should clean it up. And replaced two of the engine mount bolts. The PO had two ridiculously long bolts where the slightly longer ones should be, one of them standard, the other with a 1.5" spacer. Maybe he had pegs or an engine guard mounted? Dunno. But they are back to stock.
Tomorrow I hope to get everything back in place and fire that thing up.
