Retired Honda MC Mechanic New to Board.
« on: August 01, 2019, 05:23:18 PM »
Be lurking here for a few days soaking up some of the info and also browsing Ebay for parts.

Max Headflow name is a really sort of a twisted version of Max Headroom..

I'm pretty much an old retired guy that loves working on bikes and making things. About 2 years ago I joined the San Diego Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club.  Since I spent 12 years working as a wrench (1969-1981) mainly on Hondas I figured to get one sort of restore. I've owned a number of hondas, the last four cylinder being a 76 CB550F which I bought new and put 66000 miles on.  I do currently own a 2002 XR400, some HDs and a couple special construction bikes.

Anyway  I bought a 78 CB750K.  While the bike has only 23000 miles on it, it's acquired a bit of a patina so it will be coming a part for some powdercoat, cleanup. The tanks and side covers don't look to bad as someone had painted them OK but the frame is pretty rusty, as are the wheels and pipes. Controls and instruments are weathered. Motor looks to have oil leaks from the rubber plugs under the cam towers.  I not sure if the headgasket is OK but most of those when they started to leak were from the oil galleries on the ends of the cylinders (IIRC). Compression is pretty much 135-140 psi on all cylinders, Plugs look clean.

It's got the typical lean running symptoms off idle, that I need to fix but then I remember them being pretty lean when new.

I'll probably be asking a few questions on for sure but may be able pull up some good info from my worn out memories.

Bruce

PS I looks like I need to find a picture hosting site.

Welcome from NE MN,

The secret for pictures is to keep posting.  The magic number I believe is 5.  Once you reach that many post you can upload pictures here.  You can also link to some other site immediately.

Thanks for the welcome.

On thing I have to admit is that I'm not good at restoring to original.  I've pretty much modified every bike I've owned. Most of the changes were towards performance and handling.  I'm not too good at restoring.  I'm more of a "bead blast it off and cover with paint or powder coat" kind of guy but I'm surely open to cleaning up what I got if it ain't too bad.

I should add (while getting my post count up) that I sure hope the "verification:" thing will go away also.

Welcome Bruce. You do not need to use a photo hosting site; you can attach photos directly to the site using the "Attachments and other options" button below the dialog box where you type messages. There is no minimum post requirement to attach photos, but try to keep them below 4 megs in size.
The verification thing should go away after 5 posts. ;)

Here a picture of the bike.  It had an exhaust leak I wanted to fix.   I'm not sure where these collars cam from but they were only about 0.050" thick. I remade some of out of steel tubing.  A little trick as I didn't have exhaust gaskets on hand and they still leaked one side 2 cylinders.  Pulled em out flipped em over. No leaks.

The plan is to get it running well before the teardown.

Thanks for the kind words.   One thing to note is that any info I might have is dated.  One thing that I've noticed here is that there has been some very good information on changes and what fits what.  Back when I worked on these bikes, we pretty much replaced broken stuff with new so we didn't pay any attention to what the changes were.  There are are quite a few guys here that have impressed this old guy with their knowledge here.  I'm already appreciating older posts and their help on questions  that I've asked.
