LED tail light troubles
« on: September 09, 2019, 07:27:59 PM »
So on my k2 I have a tail light that I like the style of the housing a lot, but no incandescent I've found has had a bright enough difference between just running light and when brakes are applied. I've decided to try using an led bulb, and I've gotten ones from advance auto parts, and online. Problem is they dont work, the bulbs are 1157 line the incandescent. When I have the ignition set to park, the bulbs don't illuminate, if I jiggle it around in the socket I get a very dim glow from some of the led elements. However if I trigger the brake light switch while in park it illuminates fully. However when ignition is turned to run, it doesn't turn on when I turn on headlights or trigger the brake. Incandescents function as they should, just not getting the brightness I'd like. Any ideas?

Does the light work fine when using the headlight?

Incandescent yes, led, no. I may post a vid tomorrow to show the different conditions.

The brake light circuit should not be powered in park.
An 1157 filament bulb is super bright in "stop" (very few LED ones are as bright) so probably there is a problem in the tail light socket or the harness - a bad ground maybe? The main difference between a filament lamp and an LED is that the LED only works with one polarity, and blocks current the other way. A bad ground or bad connection somewhere might light a filament bulb but not an LED.
Since you say the filament bulb is not bright enough I suspect a connection problem. And having the brake switch do anything in park is very odd indeed.
