Yep (and apologies to Dave for the thread hijack) but lots of interesting things happened when I worked at gas stations. I did another 14 years working part time when I was in the Army, as spare cash to spend on...... motorcycles, of course.

Hughie (my partner in crime, God rest his soul) and I were both working out in the "full service" gas station when a guy drove in in a new Ford Cortina. Hughie filled his car while I checked the oil, water, cleaned the windscreen etc. Before Hughie could put the gas cap back on, he took off without paying! We ran in and told Dave, but back then there was no CCTV etc, and we didn't remember the registration number, but being a small town, Dave rang the local Ford dealership and they were able to tell him that a local guy had bought a new silver Cortina on Ford Finance a few months prior, and was behind on his payments, so Dave gave that info to the cops. The Police went around to his house, but he wasn't home.

This was over the Christmas holidays, which here in Oz, is usually as hot as hell. 3 weeks later a Boy Scout group were doing an activity in an area near the Mitchell River and noticed a Ford Cortina covered in what they thought were bees. On closer inspection, they were flies. There was a body inside. The information that filtered back to us was the guy drove straight from the gas station to that spot, he'd put his garden hose into the exhaust pipe and ran it back into the drivers window, and gassed himself.

Once the guys body was removed, the car went back to the Ford dealership. They stripped the entire interior out of the car and threw it away, pressure washed the fluids out of it, and fitted a new interior. A cop bought it on the cheap, but almost had a nervous breakdown, because of the stench, that just wouldn't go away. The dead guys fluids had run into every void in the car's floor, and no amount of cleaning or air freshener was ever gonna fix it. I believe that it ended up going back to the dealership and being stripped for parts, then the shell was crushed. The worst thing about living in a country town in the 70's was that lots of bad things happened, and everyone knew everyone, so there was not much in the way of help for folks with mental issues back then.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

well i tested those knobbies today and i shoulda had em on from the word go,they make the bike more what im used to for a dirt bike, the front end stays planted,we did a near 200 kay ride today and its been wet all week, the clay didnt faze me like if i had the other tyres on,i did suffer a short in the tail light though, big deal,it took out the only fuse on the bike that runs all the lights bar head and tail light, didnt have a spare stupid me,so i did what any other sensible dumb #$%* would do and disconnected the tail light and jambed a master link where the fuse should be,i taped it over and rode the rest of the day,man i love simple bikes, they suit me being a semi simpleton!!

Well done Dave, if you were a smoker and it was the old glass fuse you could just tear a little foil out of your cigarette pack and wrap it around the fuse, and continue on your way, I've done that a few times over the years.

I went for a ride on the K0 today, but when I got home I jumped on the RT3 and kick started it easy on the second kick, no kicking back, it was lovely. I rode it out from under the temporary carport where it's been parked for a week or so next to my Kawasaki 1428 (that I still haven't installed the engine in) and it felt like it had a flat back tyre?

WTF? I fired up the compressor and went to pump it up, and nada, I think I must have torn the tube. What a pain in the d1ck, now I have to install another tube. I think I've got one for a CB750 in a box somewhere, I better get my tyre levers out and swap it out, not that I'm planning on any dirt adventures any time soon. ;D

You need rim locks on those dirt bikes.  Also I  never put the nuts on the valve stem, that way if you do get tire to rim movement it doesn't rip the stem off so easy.

Thanks mate, I’ve noticed that both steel rims are a bit wobbly but Spotty’s got a set of DT1 wheels at his place, with nice alloy rims and they probably have rim locks fitted, so I might install my tyres on those rims and install them on my RT3. ;D

G’Day Bill, really good mate, it now starts on the second or third kick from cold, and first kick when at operating temp. The carb has stopped leaking too, so I’m pretty happy. ;D

those knobbies are fine on dry pavement,i can feel the knobs as they go round n round,i wouldnt like to push it on wet paved roads though?im not using rim locks by the way,i dont run em that low pressure.
i found some heavy stainless mesh and straight away thought exhaust system material!i slammed a piece between two sockets to make a new end plug to replace the piston one,i felt its a little restrictive but straight open is TOO loud, ill see how this sounds,it needs repacking again all the glass wool has evaporated(again),not a scerrick in there?

Terry, did member Bryan in the U.K. post a picture of that dial indicator bracket he said he had ? Does your Yamaha manual give any indication of how to mount that dial indicator ?

Yeah Bill, I could easily mount the dial indicator if I wanted to remove the head, but I don't really think there's a need now, it starts nice and easy and goes very well. ;D

Yeah they're getting up there in price Dave, I think I'll hang on to mine and get it looking nice, then decide what to do with it, it's just so easy to chuck around compared to a big heavy road bike, or even some of the super tall modern dirt bikes, so good for an old fart like me with deteriorating strength. An electric start would be nice, but it's an easy starter now, so might be a keeper. ;D

I'm thinking that I might give it a better resto Bill, I fired it up again today after another 140 miles on the K0 and it fired right up, but a PO has done a really awful "restoration" so I might strip it back to the bare frame and strip and paint it, and go from there. I just need to be mindful of not having too many ongoing projects at the one time. Also, I'm negotiating my first Harley "Big Twin" purchase from a mate, and part of that will be my K2 bitsa plus some cash, so need to quickly (but properly) rebuild the K2's engine as a priority. ;D
