I have a facebook account and it's been handy for buying a couple of bikes cheap, and some parts, especially Kawasaki parts from the US, but I've been ripped off by two arseholes in the US to the tune of over $1000 USD. The great thing about this forum (apart from all the guys here who I consider friends) is that there is little or no chance of getting ripped off by sellers who start an account, advertise parts for sale, get your money, and disappear, never to be seen again.

I also like posting all my builds, whether they be Honda's, Kawasaki's, or whatever. While we all have Honda's, a lot of us are interested in other brands too. Keep it going Glenn, I'm not sure what I'd do if this forum disappeared. What about an annual premium? I'd be up for that if it helped? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I’m new to the forum and finally got a CB500 which I have been after for awhile.

Opinion of a newbie:  The information and knowledgeable people here are first rate. The forum software is klunky, especially on my phone. Also, I there are no notifications when someone has posted on a thread I’m watching, which I find useful on other forums. And there are no “likes” which are useful for newbies trying to figure out which of the conflicting answers on a thread are correct (cb500 OEM clutch cable routing for example. FYI over the coils thru the frame is correct!).

The best forum software I’ve seen is the one used at Tacomaworld.com. Lively notification options, and the forum software serves sponsored links at the bottom of each page to products mentioned in the threads. This is helpful advertising and clicking the links funds the site.

The Honda XL forum which I participated in just went defunct after a long decline, and all info was lost. How can I help support this one?

P.S.  I asked how to support the site because when I click "Donate" or "support the site", I get a blank white page w/o content.  Mac OS 10.14 Safari browser.
Update:  on my phone the Donate page works, so I contributed that way.  Could be a privacy extension on Mac blocking the donate page on PayPal.

Also, I just noticed the "notify" button at the bottom of my post.  Oops, please ignore my request for notifications, that already exists!  So maybe I have nothing to complain about, it’s all there I am just not used to the format.

We did have "Likes" for a little while a few years ago mate, but it was removed, although I can't remember why? I thought it was a good thing too. ;D

This forum is very important so an annual fee is no problem to ensure it to keep running.
I think that most people will see $25-30US as an amount they can, $50US might be seen as much when time to transfer.

In my opinion, "likes" lead to a sort of popularity contest; leave that crap for Fakebook. ;) Just because one opinion has more likes doesn't mean it is the correct answer...

People can comment if a post or thread helped them.
I'm sure all kinds of problems that can happen a CB750, 500/550 owner is covered by posts on this forum ;)

Yep.  When it was tried before too many people got hung up on how many likes they were or were not getting on their posts, and it turned into a major, contentious topic all its own.

+1 Scottly.

Likes have NOTHING to do with correctness. This is NOT FakeBook, Twatter, or any of the other social disease sites. Even as is there are many differing opinions, ideas and ways of doing things on here. Read them all, combine them, try them, decide what works best for you. Oh, and good luck. This is a learning experience and many of us learn the wrong way first.

If you go to http://www.sohc4.net/donate, there are a number of options for donating to the site.

And, if you cannot contribute financially, contributions of content (articles, scans of manuals, etc) are always welcome.  I recently finished refreshing www.sohc4.net and am beginning to work on refreshing manuals.sohc4.net and articles.sohc.net so I can get improve the process of getting new content online.

One thing that I've been thinking about lately which I've been meaning to pitch to everyone is that I want to put up something like 'shop.sohc4.net' with a new line of quality club merchandise.  If there is anyone out there who has graphic design skills, it would be great to collaborate on a venture that split revenue between someone running the shop, artists who design the merchandise and this site.

Thanks Glenn, I’ve made a few donations over the years, but I think an annual subscription is a more reliable revenue source. I’m gutted that due to Covid-19 my favourite motorcycle magazine has gone broke, I was a subscriber for the last 10 years, and had just paid my subscription fees a month before it fell over.

I’d hate to see this site disappear for lack of regular funding. As Per suggested, 20-30 bucks is affordable for just about anyone here who is serious about hanging around here. ;D

G'Day Brian, "Australian Motor Cycle Trader". While I didn't agree with some of the lefty politics of some of the journo's, and some of the technical inaccuracies, even from their resident "Expert" pissed me off, but generally speaking, it was a good read. Hopefully once the pandemic is wiped off the face of the earth, a new mag will start, and I'll be able to enjoy my toilet library again. ;D

I agree with a lot of what's been said here about the SOHC4 site. Agree with the sentiment to leave 'likes' and 'dislikes' off..for reasons mentioned.
Thanks Glenn for all you do/have done to keep the site going.  Like Terry's suggestion about just giving annual donations.  Hell.. $30.00 in today's world seems awfully measly to me. Was thinking that $50.00 annually (or more) should not be a problem for most of us. I'll send Glenn $100.00 myself..and I'm on SS nowadays..no problemo.
In addition to the SOHC4 stuff we all talk about..I simply value the fact that we have a relatively friendly and easy to navigate website..amidst all the clutter and BS seen elsewhere on the Internet.

One thing I have done a few times is sellsomething small like 10 to 30 bux, then let buyer donate to forum,  rathervthan oay me..  and sometime you shorted yourself like 6 bux on shipping , so tell buyer to send balance to forum....  sometimes in that case they make it an even amount like 10 bux.

Like Frank, I have on several occasions mailed parts to members at my expense, asking only that they make a donation to the forum. The way donations used to work required a paypal or credit card, which I don't have, so that was an easy way for me to contribute. When I started making Frank's weldless frame kits, I had to call on member Danny to handle the paypal transactions for any international sales, and I had him make a donation to the forum for me for each transaction.

Thanks Al, I suggested 30 bucks because I know a lot of guys are doing it tough with CV caused unemployment and didn’t want to see people being excluded because they can’t afford a subscription. Feel free to pay as much as you can afford, but a minimum of 30 bucks should be doable for most of the members here. ;D

Was it that long ago Brian? Time goes so fast, it was Sammy Green who kicked the whole thing off, he asked me to go visit you in hospital to see how you were doing, and I’m glad I did, it gave me somewhat of an insight into what happens when you pitch yourself at a great rate of knots into an immovable object, but also gave me the pleasure of representing the generous members here who rallied together to help you and Ev at a difficult time in your lives.

I still chat to Sammy on FB now and then, he’s doing it tough at the moment as he’s been in lockdown for months due to his poor health ever since his big crash a few years ago. He says he still drops in to see how things are going, which is good, he’s a top bloke. ;D
