CB350F Carb Slide direction

I have a 1974 CB350F and was wondering which direction the carb slides go. I have  attached two images one with the opening in the skirt facing the airbox and the other with the opening facing the cylinder head. It seems the slides go in either way.

Which direction is correct?

The side with the cutout faces the air box.
