Hey Terry, yes we had similar Kawas here- the ZZR1100 then ZZR1200, which was the sports tourer range (though still mighty fast and with little legroom), and the ZX12R then ZX14R range, which started out as the Hayabusa-challenger as you say, with similar intentions for being the first 200mph production bike but in more of a sports bike manner, then gradually was detuned and became the less sports-orientated ZX14R.  The ZZRs have a relatively conventional twin-spar frame, while one of the interesting features of the the ZX12R is it's alloy monocoque - check out the pic below. The grey bit is the fuel tank while the black thing under the wiring harness is the frame, it's a huge alloy box that also doubles as the airbox.  Interesting technology and very effective, though it does make accessing the plugs & valves tricky. If you're after a 25 year old quick bike, the GSXR750 SRAD I mentioned earlier is from 1996 and awesome.

Jaguar- nice collection! How do you get on with the Monster?  I tidied up a 1993 M900- adorable engine, pig to work on, amazing brakes, strange suspension, really enjoyable to ride, though weird riding position.   What's your thoughts?

Wow, that's a lot of bike for not much money Tim, as much as I love my Honda CB750's and Kawasaki Z's from the 70's, the cheap 10-20 year old bikes that you can pick up nowadays are just awesome! I have to keep telling myself that I don't need any more bikes, but looking at yours, well, I suppose one more wouldn't really matter.........? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, I’ll be a lot sicker if the wife finds out I’ve bought another bike Brian! I am thinking about selling some bikes, I just can’t decide which ones? ;D

Unfortunately I'm Down on all my bikes. all in various stages of work.
XS650 lost a battle in a shop fire. so it needs rec rwg stator and a complete rewire. Then have to rebuild my parta carbs for it.

73 Cb500/550 needs raked wired amd the rear wheel relaced and trued.

74 cb550 is stripped down to just motor in frame and wheels.

75 sporty is a longer term thought I'm collecting parts for.
Have a 21 invader billet narrowglide and a 200 tire frame for it atm.

Ha ha, thanks Steve, I don’t ask for permission or forgiveness, and she just shakes her head, but when I built the K2 “Swamp Rat” in 2019 and sold it for around $5K USD to one of the managers at work, I think she started to realise there is some method in my madness.

Was the other bomber that one on Craigslist? Is 2500 a good price for one? I’m bidding on a 1983 GPZ1100 at the moment, I don’t think I’ll win it, but I have a spare engine for one so it’d be good if I did, they were a bike I was very interested in buying back in the day, brutal, unrefined, but wickedly fast. ;D

Hey Terry...I sold some Kawasaki Triples project bikes last month and threw the wifey some "Benjamins", she was like, sell some more bikes!

Yes, $2500 is a very good price for a Bomber these days, you rarely ever see them for sale let alone under $5K. I've decided it's not IMPRESSIVE enough to buy!!

Ha ha, yeah, when I told the wife that the insurance company happily agreed on $20K  (AUD, about $15K USD) "agreed value" for my K0, she started to realise that it wasn't a bad investment considering that it cost me less than half that much to build. Same/same with my Z1-B that I haven't put together yet.

My "collection" is currently insured for $170K agreed value, and while insurance valuations are always a little above actual resale value, I insured them for pretty much what they're selling for presently. When I retire I'll be unloading at least half of them, so that'll go well towards keeping me in ginger beer for my senior years.

I like those black bombers, but not sure if I'd spend a lot of money on one, they're a nice bike for sure, but not high on my priority list. I'd rather find a nice two stroke road bike just for a change. I must go and pick up those two Puch "Twingles" that my cuz has given me soon, they're not very fast, but are intereesting. ;D

First ride of 2021.

I'm in a quandary.  In a few months I'll have enough spare cash to buy an exhaust system.  Do I buy a set of stainless Higgspeed chambers for the H1A, or a stainless Delkevic 6-1 for the CBX?  :P

We had a little warm up, it rained most of the day yesterday, with mid-40's temp forecast today, so I figured I'd take a little ride on each bike to run them a little.  I started with the 750 and found the roads slathered with salt.  It seems after the rain yesterday, the county figured the roads would freeze, so they salted the hell out of everything late yesterday.  I won't ride in salt on purpose, but since I was out I just stayed with the 750 and washed it off when I got back.  The other bikes will wait until another day.  At 65 miles I was a little short of Franks thread threshold, but it works for this one.   ;)

Nice! Well I'd go the Delkevic on the CBX if it was me, but I guess it's a personal opinion, I just like that old Kawasaki as it is?

Like you Trevor, today was my first ride for 2021, after constant rain since Saturday. I'd run out of things to do at home and stay dry so decided that fcuk the weather, I was going for a ride. I have to stop choosing the same route to Heathcote to have lunch at the bakery, but I'm a sucker for a pie or pastie, and the place is big, clean, and (for me especially) has a nice clean restroom. I drove over to the self storage place and rolled my FJR1300 out into the overcast daylight.

Now believe it or not, it's summer here, and this time last year the state was on fire. Today was so cold I put on a thermal long sleeve top, a flannel shirt, and my Dririder jacket. I also threw on some waxed cotton camo overpants that I was issued around 100 years ago, or so. Even though it was lightly raining, I realised not far into the ride that I was overdressed, so I had to lower the fairing screen to blow a blast of cold air into my helmet to keep me cool.

I stopped at an old church in Romsey and took my flannel shirt off, and packed it into my topbox. That helped, a lot.

I rode on for another 40 miles before the sun came out, and by the time I got to Heathcote, the waterproof pants came off too. After a fine repast I decided to go home via a different route again, 35 miles of fast sweepers (and no Kangaroos, thank God) past my old Army base, then onto the freeway and another 50 miles home. I wasn't keen on using the freeway but I needed to filter 20 gallons of ginger beer and was running out of time.

As I rode back into the outskirts of Melbourne the dark clouds came back but I didn't get wet, so I rolled the big Yamaha back into it's garage, and promised I'd take it out again soon. ;D

I just like that old Kawasaki as it is?

It looks good in the photo, but the left hand pipe has battery acid staining & a little bit of rust damage.  On the other hand, my CBX has Marving pipes, which look great, but have a disappointing exhaust note...

Either choice is guaranteed to bring out the 19 year old hoon in me!

Gorgeous H1! [need to get mine out]   Easy decision for me, keep the stock H1 exhaust and go for the CBX exhaust if it really needs it.

well i would not bother with the higgspeeds , they look great on the bike but the dyno results are poor .

So there you go Trevor, the votes are in, get the Delkevic! I looked at one on Ebay and thought it was a bit expensive at twice the price as one for a CB750 though, two more header pipes and a 6 into 1 collector, but it's the same muffler as the ones on my 750's, so I'm trying to understand why it's so expensive?

I know there are more 750's than CBX's around, so maybe it's because a smaller production run makes it more expensive, but I was a bit surprised at how much money they're charging? I do like them though, although the headers do discolor very quickly, and I'm trying to remember what product I need to buy to make them shiny again? If anyone knows, give me a heads up, I think I saw a guy using toilet cleaner on a youtube video that worked well, but when I looked for that brand here, I couldn't find it? ;D

Okay, so finally, the first sunny day in Melbourne, for 2021! And what a day it was. I convinced the wife to go visit her mum today, so I could do my second ride for the year. Being a sunny day, and being that I've been farting around with the carbs on the K0, I decided that it was next cab off the rank for a ride. It was only my third ride on the K0 but being that it hasn't exploded yet, it'd be a great vehicle to explore the hills and twisties between my place and Yea, a little town 80 miles north east of my place.

After my carb and ignition adjustments the other day, it started right up and with the new old tach cable, I was happy that the tach needle wasn't bouncing all over the place at idle. I decided to fill it up 10 miles or so into the ride just because there aren't that many gas stations when I ride the back roads to Yea, and I wasn't sure I'd make it with what was in the tank. I took the backroads to Yea via Beveridge, Whittlesea, and Kinglake West. I stopped out the back of Eden Park (a name with no place) for a pic, and a stretch.

K0 Thursday 7 Jan 2021 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I was actually being very conservative speed-wise as I was just enjoying the day when I rounded a bend to see the road blocked off and the cops conducting a "Random Breath Test" (RBT) operation for all vehicles heading in the opposite direction. No issue for me as it was too early for me to have imbibed in the demon alky-hole anyway, so I just cruised on past. It was good to see the holiday crowds in Kinglake and Yea, lots of motorcycles on the road. (the only old one I saw was a Norton about the same vintage as the K0, the rest seemed to be adventure bikes and cruisers) I decided not to stop for food as the mask rule is a bit of a pain in the arse, so I pulled off the road for a piss on my way back to Whittlesea.

I took another pic of the bike, then hit the road. I filled the bike up in Whittlesea again, (and was happy that I was averaging 45 miles per gallon) then rode the backroads to Beveridge, hitting the freeway for the last 15 miles home. The tacho started to play up just past Beveridge, I was hoping the cable had just come loose at the bottom of the tach, but no, it was nice and secure, then a mile or so from home it started working again. I'll check the cable tomorrow, but I think it might be the gauge. I do have the guts from another K0 tach that had a really nice face, until I dropped it, oops.

K0 Thursday 7 Jan 2021 9 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

A little superglue later, and it was (almost) like new again.

K0 Thursday 7 Jan 2021 9a by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I've never pulled a K0 tach apart, if anyone here has any tips, let me know? Anyway, today's ride was 141 miles, so the K0 has now done a total of 394 miles. I think I'll drop the oil and filter at 500 miles, just to take a look and make sure everything's fine. So far, so good. ;D

OK, so this weekend I decided I was gonna go visit my Ma, who lives in my home town for my first 17 years, before I joined the Army and never moved back. It's a 200 mile ride or drive each way, so I usually drive or ride every few weeks, but due to the Covid 19 lockdown, I haven't been home since March last year.

Rather than drive my big comfy Ford SUV with it's luxury leather interior and icy cold aircon (it's been in the high 70's-mid 80's for the last few days and will be over 100 tomorrow) I thought, Why not ride the big blue Yamaha FJR1300? So I drove over to the self storage place yesterday, and by high noon I was sitting on a big watercooled bike blowing hot air all over me, resplendent in my heavy Leather jacket, boots, jeans, helmet and gloves.

After riding it 246 Km (154 miles) on Thursday, the fuel gauge said that I was half full, so I assumed I could take a break from the ride at the  halfway mark, but the gauge got down to 1/8 of a full tank, and I sh1t myself, pulled into a gas station 20(?) miles short of my target town, but was still happy that I'd done 250 miles on 19.83 litres of gas. (54 MPG) While at the gas station, I bought a cold drink to rehydrate, and to wash down a couple of Voltaren anti-inflammatory tablets (that I'm not allowed to have) to reduce the pain welling in my lower back, shoulders, and neck.

FJR1300 weekend 9-10 Jan 2021 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The big blue beast was behaving beautifully despite the heat, and the temp gauge only climbed above the halfway mark once or twice whilst going thru slow moving traffic, but the "good used" thermo fan that I installed 3(?) years ago fired up as soon as it went past  the halfway mark, which was great, as the old one didn't work at all. I stayed on the freeway with it's 110 KPH speed limit until I jumped on my favourite back roads where the posted speed was 100 (60 MPH) but (Kangaroos, Wallaby's, snakes, echidna's, possums and wombats permitting) anything up to 250 is possible. (not that I'd do that, of course....)

I stopped at this intersection, where "Prendergast Drive" was signposted a couple of years ago, named after my Dad. (true story) It's a dead end street, kind of ironic as it was erected a year or two after his death.

FJR1300 weekend 9-10 Jan 2021 3 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Anyway, that was 10 minutes from home. I dropped around to my mate Pete's place, but he was out, so I continued on to my Ma's place.

FJR1300 weekend 9-10 Jan 2021 4 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

FJR1300 weekend 9-10 Jan 2021 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Ma is 92, still lives at home, still has all her marbles, completed another university degree last year (the oldest ever graduate of Melbourne University) was nominated for "Australian Senior of the Year 2020" and was interviewed by the BBC (in Britain) as a piece they did on "The world's 20 most influential women of 2020". After watching my dad rot in the dementia wards of several homes in the two years he was an inmate, she told me that she will never see the inside of a nursing home. Her house is weird, everyone says it's haunted, and everyone has a story about it. I stayed up until midnight watching "The Godfather Part 2" (Ma went to bed at 9pm) and had an interesting night's sleep, but I digress.

I'd checked the coolant level in the header tank before I left, and it was empty. Hmmnnn, I'd replaced all the hoses a couple of years ago and filled it with new coolant, and "burped" the system properly, but when I was having electrical issues (before I finally replaced the battery and they all went away) I do remember the smell of burning coolant a couple of  times? It didn't overheat at all yesterday, but things like that burn into my anxiety, so this morning I decided to fill the tank before I left.

To do this, you need to reach into a gap in the lower right fairing panel, undo a 10mm head bolt, remove the metal cover on the header  tank, and pull the rubber plug that seals it. I did all that, then the rubber plug fell into the bowels of the bike's fairing. Fcuk. OK, tools out, removed six screws, pulled the lower fairing panel, and retrieved the plug. Poofter. Ma loaned me a funnel, and I tipped some tap water into the header tank. It took all of about a cupful of water. What a waste of time that was. Oh well, I suppose it would have been worse if needed a gallon?

Anyway, My Ma wanted to take a pic of me with the bike and she reminded me that she took a pic of me with the same bike in 2016. They're an interesting "Before and after" if anyone here is a tad overweight and considering bariatric surgery.

FJR1300 weekend 9-10 Jan 2021 9 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I left around 9am and at that time it was only in the low 70's, so reasonably pleasant, even with my 30 year old leather jacket, helmet, boots and gloves on. After the first (slightly illegal) 90 miles, I stopped for a disgusting McDonald's breakfast (I haven't had one in maybe a year, and wondered how for a few years I lived on that sh1t?) then another 50 miles up the road I filled the tank again, and once again was amazed at the gas mileage of this thing, I certainly wasn't riding it easy, but it sipped the 98 RON fuel like a little commuter bike.

As I rode on, it got hotter and hotter. A big watercooled bike can be a pleasure in cold weather, but on a hot day, heat that's built up under the fairing then blown over the rider isn't much fun. I'd bought a bottle of water at the gas station, so I rode on another 10 miles and stopped at my mate Fred's place. Fred has a mint K1, a well worn K1 he's owned and ridden since the 80's, a couple of Triumphs (old ones) AJS, Matchless', etc. We sat under his tree and talked #$%* for half an hour while I drank a litre of water. By this time it was 1pm, so I rode on to Melbourne, as it got hotter.

I wasn't too unlucky, I got more green lights than red once I got back into the 'burbs, and was happy back at the self storage place where the big Yamaha lives, and able to strip off the jacket, lid and gloves. I got into my car, turned the aircon on high, drove the 5 minutes back to my place, stripped off my sweaty T shirt and jeans, and jumped in the shower.

I must have been really dehydrated still, because I've drunk 2 litres of Ginger Joe and I'm not drunk. Well maybe I am, because I just bought this bike off FB, had the seller deliver it, and sneaked it down the driveway. I wonder if it'll still be there when I wake up? ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Your Mother sounds like a true gem Terry ! Those Yammie 360's have a very distinct sound to them, kind of a cool pop pop pop sound.  Friend of mine had one way back and I used to like to take it out for a spin now and then.  Can't have too many toys !!

I want to be just like Terry when I grow up..., except without the trips to the hospital and the Kawasaki t-shirt while riding a Yamaha!

Keep living your best life Terry!

Interesting trip, Terry!
Must feel fine to be allowed to have a decent ride after the long no go anywhere.

Maybe one of your CBs next time? No coolant needed ;)
Unless you need luggage as your blue cruiser have bags for.
