Statistically very few people live farther than 20 miles from where they grew up. More than 75% of people live close to their childhood home. So, depending upon where you live some don’t travel far. I became accustomed to traveling and have most of my life, so 25-35 miles isn’t a huge distance in my mind , but my siblings act as if it is. In big cities traveling very far takes much longer is the disadvantage from living in the suburbs or countryside.

Old people don’t travel as far usually so I think the joke above was in reference to the 10 miles being a long trip for an old codger...

Spent a short time on the project today (grass cutting season again). Cleaned out the master cylinder reservoir, added fresh fluid and bled. My “Mity-Vac” vacuum pump did it’s usual excellent job, and the “crooked” banjo bolt that I screwed back into the caliper with new copper washers, seems to be dry. I hate the look of it, but it’s been that way for a while..... it tightened up well, and remains leak free, I’ll leave it alone.

I have to respond to the above comment with an incident that took place several days ago. I rode the Chopper to local grocery store to pick up a package of hamburger buns, needless to say the bike is not conducive for large grocery orders. When I came out of the store a very elderly lady parked next to the bike was getting out of her mid 90's Buick Century (of course), asked "Young man what type of bike is that?" I told her it was somewhat of a mixture turned into a 70's area chopper. She replied that she really liked the way the motorcycle looked, in her words, "It was very cool". When I told my wise ass Son-in-Law about the incident, his only comment was "When the hell was the last time someone called you young man?".......

Some old folks are a hoot. I liked doing plumbing for the ladies that lived during WW2. They seemed to know how to fix a faucet or toilet and were pretty no nonsense. One mentioned she would have fixed it herself, she had the washers but no longer had a seat cutting tool or seat wrenches. Another watched me flare a copper tube then asked aren't you supposed to put the nut on first? Got me on that one.

I had to laugh.. a buddy Peter got back into riding around age 64, thot he would only ride a bit. Went thru 2 Burgmans anda big Beemer., first year 35, ooo kms second year around 30, 000, next year only 20 + K.. he is done now for several reasons..
But I laugh when I read older folks dont ride much.,

Made me laugh! Flare nuts and shrink wrap (always spot it on the floor, AFTER soldering on the connector!).

Got the Mikuni carbs off the chopper today. The intake manifolds are definitely the Sudco units you guys suggested! Despite the staining on the float bowls, the insides are spotless. Float pins slid out freely, no damaged or mangled hardware! 110 Mains and 17.5 idle jets appear “new”, just going to clean them and put it all back together.

Local guys (Hildebrandt Gasket Company) make lovely rubberized gaskets. Hoping they can supply the new ones I need. Bench synced the carbs and they are spot on, so not touching them. Anyone know the float heights for these?? Sure I can find the info somewhere.

Mikuni specifies using the clear tube method with fuel level set at 3-5mm below gasket surface of bowl.

Nope kz650 have vertical ribs cast into upper slide area and either 24mm or 22mm. First thing you need to do is measure the i.d. of the engine side carb bore...should be 26, 28, or 29mm.

Z1 Enterprises used to have a really nice web page up on how to identify, but of course now that the Jeff sold it to Dime City I have not been able to find that info.

Nice and very knowledgeable bunch over at KZRider forum can i.d. those quick.

Measured at 27 mm. Carefully inspected every carb and there are no numbers.

Sudco specify 23 mm float height on VM29 if they are similar.

Thanks PEWE. I found some hard tubing nipples about the right side. I may just make four nipples and do this on the bench before I install them. If it gets messy I’ll take som pictures!

Finished up the carbs today. As soon as the new float bowl gaskets arrive, “Test and Tune”. My first ride is not far off! As Sean B. suggested, I cobbled up a steady bracket that links the idle adjustment bracket to the frame for some additional support. While I’m waiting, started polishing the individual front spokes. COVID PROJECT! Damn thing looks pretty good.

The carbs are in fact Mikuni VM26SS (Special Set) found on KZ 900 A4,5. And air cooled Suzuki GS750/1000’s. Info was a little tough, as the carbs have no numbers stamped anywhere!
