Valuation Help 1978 CB750K
« on: April 11, 2021, 04:40:46 PM »
The first question I will ask is this:  Can I ask valuation questions?  I have a bike I am thinking of selling.

Perrsonally I think a real valuation can only be done by an expert on such thing ,seeing the actual item , hearing/seeing it run and riding it testing break, engine power delivery etc etc..

A good group of photos and maybe some history may get you some ball park ideas, also depends on your area.

What is the 1% non-stock? Original exhausts in decent condition have an enormous influence on value

Don't think there are any rules here against it. Using completed sales results in E-bay and the like auctions can help, kind of like real estate and getting comparable pricing.

Well okay.  Yes, it has the original exhaust.  Gigantic and quiet.  It is nearly 100% all original.  That said, it the headlight bucket is in a box (the headlight on it is aftermarket), and the headlight bucket and ring are, I am told, a little tweaked and would need some working to fit together and reinstall.  I think one of the pairs of turn signal lights might not be original, but I am not sure about that.  Side covers are not aftermarket, but they do not match and the tank has been painted, not professionally.  And so...to be a really proud bike it would need the tank, side covers and badges to be 'worked.'  Battery box is in good shape (I did clean and paint it).

The carbs were rebuilt professionally, and they work very well.  Bike has great power and smoothness, but I notice the valves have to be in good adjustment for that.  I put an electronic ignition on it.  It's a nice bike.  Heck.....with the original headlight back on, and if the tank, side covers and badges were reworked, it would be fairly pristine.  Perhaps I will take a pic or two so you can see.

Whenever I'm considering selling a bike, I look at current and past sales on eBay, BringaTrailer, and Mecum, or any other auction sites I can find. I also look at classified sites such as Cycletrader and Facebook Marketplace to see what people are asking for similar bikes. You can search all of CL and eBay from SearchTempest: https://www.searchtempest.com/

Alright.  One more.  This shows the black side cover, whereas the other painted parts are blue.  As I say, the painted parts need repainting.  And perhaps the blue one is aftermarket?

If this were in Massachusetts, NH, VT or ME it might get $1000...$1200 if its a good day. Location is everything so your market may vary. Just my opinion and lots of others may differ. Id suggest Ebay, Cycle Trader or Bring a Trailer to see what the online market thinks.

Not to be argumentative or anything, but I found this Sold listing on Ebay for a little more than $3K.  Nicer tank, for sure, and less faded instruments (mine was an Arizona bike) and with 67K miles.  Mine has 37K and, as I say, the headlight is in a box here.  So yeah, I think a bit more than $1K.  Less than $30K, though.  Probably.  ;)

It's worth what someone will pay.

Put an ad up. It only costs $5 to list on Craigslist. It's not a contract; it's an offer.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

You will eventually get offers from interested individuals, they may not be tempting offers though.

I picked up my K8 as a titled basket case for $300, for another $300 I picked up a good tank and seat. For probably another $1500 I'll put it together with a few parts I already have. But it won't be worth $2100 unless someone offers me $2100 for it. This is not a profitable venture, profit is not why we do it.

Under nearly all circumstances, stock, original bikes sell for more that bikes that have been modified.
Paint is not cheap these days, but if you painted your bike black like it came from the factory, it certainly would raise the value of it.

I have no idea what color this bike was when it left the factory.  The black side cover...I got that at a used bike parts store.  Is there a way to find out, using the frame number, what color it was originally painted?

Sure, it makes sense that an all-original bike would sell for more.  But if folks think it is only worth $1K or so as is, then it would not sell for less as a cafe racer.  I'm feeling confident it is worth more than that.  And yet, I also know these bikes are not highly valued.  Except to us.  ;)

Saw one in RI for $1200 a few days ago and it looked to be in similar condition, actually better in that the paint was original.

The 1978CB750 was the best year of all the CB750s.
IT had 21 improvements.
The only bad thing was the carbs. If you can get a set of 1969-1970 carbs it will run way better!

Forget all the bull about sandcast .

Not sure i agree.  I would rather have a 1975 in Flake Apricot, but I do think these carbs are at least as good.  They include an accelerator pump feature.  No waiting.
