E-bikes will one day replace gas bikes. It will be so boring
« on: April 18, 2021, 09:07:04 PM »
One day in the far future, gasoline engines might be outlawed. I'm sure by then we'll have e-bikes with the proper range and capacity.

But it's going to be so boring.

What are your thoughts on the prospect of having bikes with no vroom sound or vibrations?

OK if it will have antigravity technology so I can quickly fly to the sun all year around!!!

Bike meets at the other side of the pond would be nice too!! ;D

And say hello to Terry and watch when he work on his growing heard of CB750's !! ;D

My favourite now is Tenerife (Canarian island) where houses do not really need heating or cooling system. Just perfect climate.
Thanks to Wuhan Reaper, no travels. :(

Future biking gear will have breathing system connected to the fully closed helmet?  Leather suit like a slim version of austronaut gear will protect well, temperature and viruses.

I'm on the other side.  Electric power is a fun zoom zoom.

Will be interesting to see if people will focus on performance suspension and braking more.

Boring until I add an extra battery and a fat back tire.

Years ago I planned an S10 truck with a layer of batteries and an onboard Honda generator to charge when needed. Then they came out with hybrids and spoiled my plan.

From a performance stand point, electric powered things are going to be a huge. Electric motors are more efficient and the ability to have 100% power at any “rpm” is wild when you think about it. They’re more efficient than gasoline engines which means you’ll get more out of them assuming battery technology continues to improve. You can package them way differently and maintain a super low center of gravity and they should end up super light. Want to go faster? Add more voltage.

If tech keeps moving it’s going to be a whole new horizon in motorsports in every field. That being said, I’m immature and I like loud noises and will be sad when I can’t hear engines screaming or turbos whistling and stuff

We have a hybrid Fusion and while it handles really well it's just not that fun. Our state is banning the sale of new gas and diesel powered vehicles in 2030. We didn't get to vote on it, they are just ramming it down our throats. Run and charge time just isn't where it needs to be yet. Besides I don't get the satisfaction of driving without the noise and vibrations.   8)

I remember when I rode to Austria (19.000km).
2 persons + luggage with sleeping bags, tent, kitchen etc.

Continued to Rimini in Italy a week after.  1 day trip.

I wonder how that can be done on an electrical bike that should not weigh like an elephant due to a heavy battery.

Possible with 200km/day? Stay at a hotel to charge bike over night.
100-200kg battery not interesting.

I also rode on dark roads in former Jugoslavia, refill fuel late when dark.

I have enough problem today with rear tire that quit too soon.

These holidays will be very limited due to a short range.

Maybe the batteries will be stolen as common today with electrified bicycle batteries.

Scrap value of battery metals will be a huge market.

For commuting to-from jobs in a range of 100km might work.

I agree, they just don't seem to exude the kind of freedom a gas powered bike does.

the problem is they will stop selling petrol at some point . if they dont stop selling it they will put a huge tax on it . if fuel costs 50 quid a gallon and its hard to find electric vehicles start looking much better .

My two cents here..

I think that internal combustion bikes and cars will be with us for quite a while here (probably long after most of us here have gone/passed on LOL).  That being said..I do agree that electric cars and bikes will become a predominant feature of local and commuter transportation within the very near future (possibly within the next decade or two?)

There will always be the dedicated gear head and old car/bike aficionados like ourselves that will want to preserve and ride the internal combustion-powered vehicles..I believe.  And if it means that we have to secure our own supplies of gas/fuel..et al..that won't be an impossible task..I believe (just like getting leaded gas today is).

I think there's too much speculation and worry about Climate change and "global warming" right now..which is being reinforced by the concerns about Covid 19..yada-yada.  I'm not a denier that these things are happening..just saying that the concern and negative emphasis are not entirely supported by legitimate science..and that I personally believe that pessimism and defeatism are not ways to constructively move into the future.  We don't have to be foolhardy about things either..I suggest here.

check out jay Leno's take on the new Tesla cars..his comments about where he thinks we might be going in terms of "all electric vehicles"  Seemed to be a very intelligent perspective..to me anyway.

Again..my two-cents here..

I've been doing electronics, computers, controls, software and instrumentation since 1962.
I do NOT wish to ride off for the weekend on something else electrical, especially when I would have to carry along a gasoline-powered generator to charge it back up after its batteries gave out in the boonies.
...which is where I will be then...

I have always been a fan of the 2 stroke sound. I find that it drowns out all distracting sounds when riding one so you can deal with the tasks at hand , focused and at one with the machine.
Electric bikes will not offer oneness without the sound of the engine for me, I'm afraid that I 'll have to put cards in the spokes again or wait for someone to invent the sound of an engine that follows the rpms of the electric motor as it increase or decreases rpms.

Dont get me wrong.  I am totally a fan of internal combustion...noises, smells, everything.  But when I am riding single track in the woods, I look forward to the silence.

Yeah, electric sand toys would help keep orv rec areas open.

The realtors apparently neglect to mention that douglas county is a destination for free riders.
So people buy these cabins near the dunes then #$%* to usfs about the noise.

Meanwhile all the die hards are like "wish i could buy that lot and cut a trail to the sandbox"
