CB650 Stator gone bad?
« on: April 21, 2021, 06:31:36 PM »
Hey all,

On my 81 CB650c, I have an M.unit installed which tells me if a circuit is shorting out. Whenever I plug in the connector from the stator to my Reg/rec, the indicator light on the munit will flash indicating a short. If I unplug that connector, no flash. Following my manual, I tested each stator wire (the 3 yellow, 1 black, 1 white) for continuity to ground. The white and the black wire both exhibit continuity to ground. The manual tells me that this indicated the stator is bad and that I need a new one. I just wanted to come on here and get a second opinion before I go replace a part that doesn't need it.

Thanks,

As a side note, does anyone know if this type of stator replacement is even worth looking at or should I just get a Ricks?: https://www.ebay.com/itm/272678167506?fits=Year%3A1981%7CModel%3ACB650C%7CMake%3AHonda&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item3f7ce2a3d2:g:Fx4AAOSwK6RZHuwv&amdata=enc%3AAQAFAAACgBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%252Fn%252BzU5L90Z278x5ickkY3FSd4Ad8xn3oRtkVexxrGxZ6tNctruJa85YWIUKeRD%252FCsX3DVoVngVbLKTMmac0JSx7A3NZFTiRrilDhNB8ntwwDxKg6EI%252BoqDR1cGiOtIPYMTMAajBO2gFZOyVLLwl%252BdBCaWuihUEAFN0pTFeyAddJiT2s%252FF4S%252FCx24GHZ4i7vnjmXpPRkFrYGn8YOcvLvAL40WXOl8%252B0SbkLTSx%252BP82glizFhmQFadvwSVMMQBE1eHdt6WuDJaHpLaEEw1rs3fiLwN8WDy0g63%252FbydguN1voiFZAIjaDK7v%252F9b%252BnyxIniNbD45rgbFMYP7tzBGPfhpjAgPLkx13UpupwJqjbcxM6qWewFqt6tycf8nISTryqkxlgbleCsQlJBqHdDyWAKGIgiWv1QMotgKPmItln0bhlqtf6G6rT3sVK5LvqPej2wx9PG82sMVwk%252F8GQdkKeWTT5PYSvn6QL7IeOA2MzLTyCYdy0t8YmN9aXQWxAzQWL1GT%252B%252FQdUuyqGWTyvIU7ThFMGLOXw4Lro6xhftOnx2z8b%252BwUhDJ4IA%252BksaFSWj191lYBrAAKXa41ihZh7We378LdJ1dHthMhw9CsnpSBE%252Bi4VHCozf8VxZ%252F54ZXKcAz4qxCfW2QyvMIlz2YDrz7CbIjjYNUQCjT9zO1fhBUtfjwyhZABLi9M1q3DU7%252BKYl6n5j%252FPOEqiJb91Ucu3j%252F7ialIk2WeY6yWqllneQeLBxWXHO43Jui6SIoGbogdNs9%252BOkfkCtY47PNU%252FdyT0ZEj%252BnEAPbIqNdaifyk30XbNL%252FgauPR5p5YBQAA2Twccc9lrZw%253D%7Ccksum%3A2726781675069b6c1e43a4894bbb8ced51fbcc2a00db%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2334524

Right, the STATOR has the 3 yellow wires.
The ROTOR connects to the black and white wire via carbon brushes.
There are 3 "pairs" of yellow wires, if you label the wires A, B, & C you can have A-B, A-C & B-C  each pair should be low resistance BUT each yellow to ground should be very high resistance NOTE:- wires must be disconnected so you are testing yellows into engine.

ROTOR again with wires disconnected and testing into engine white to black should be low resistance and either to ground should be very high.

If rotor readings are out of spec( consult genuine Honds manual) remove the generator coverand retest direct on slip rings, if now OK  carefully check wiring
EDIT
Stators rarely go
Rotors do fail
Most common fault is wiring

Probably not, IF there is a fault and it is just not compatible with your electronic unit its probably a bad or trapped wire/connector

yep, 4.1 is good on the rotor. I'm with Bryan, check the wiring.

Okay I see. The black and white wires are for the rotor. That makes since because I've read up on similar issues and it seems the rotors go way more often that the stator. Either way, I'll check the slip rings tonight. Thanks.

Yes, it was the rotor on my CB900C
