cb750k2 fuel tank badges plate
« on: April 22, 2021, 10:09:15 AM »
hey guys... hopefully someone has a fix.

today i was riding my project bike and suddenly fuel was coming through the side of the tank.

the tank had been completely painted by some previous owner  and the dents for the emblems had been covered with paint, i did not know the condition of it below, as painting is the last thing i will do to this restoration.

the paint had bubbled up at that part, and i suspected there had to be a pinhole there, and today my suspicions where confirmed. the paint ruptured and fuel started dripping.

i removed the bubbled paint at that spot.

and the hole is right where the dents for the emblems are. this is fixable i just have to tig weld the tank.

but i noticed the plates where the emblems are held by the pins have been taken off. which is what created this problem to begin with.

what are my options here....  i want to restore the tank...  does anyone sell the plate so that i can have it re welded and be able to use the original emblems?

if this is not possible, maybe i can fabricate the plates and have them welded. i have not purchased the emblems and the little tabs that hold them in place as they are extremely expensive. i will have to get them so that i can fab the correct plates.

any suggestions of what i should do?

3M makes emblem adhesive tape and it works great from my experience.

Be prepared for the rest to not look better though. Some tanks are horror shows under all the paint and filler. But you'll never know until you try.

I made plates, pretty easy.

The tank that came with my Basket Case was so bad underneath that I figured it was more trouble than it was worth to fix it.  Multiple bad welds, dents, and at least a dozen pinholes. I couldn't see the holes until I stuck a flashlight in the tank and turned out the lights.  White dots everywhere.  There was no way I was gonna spend a bunch of time and money to fix it and paint it just to discover it still had leaks.  I don't trust sealers, but maybe they're better than they used to be.  From my experience, they only lasted a few years and then began to de-laminate.  I was able to find a nice used leak-free tank, but it wasn't cheap.

I had a similar tank, a PO had bondo'd over the tabs then tried to find the holes again with a drill bit. Then unexplicably finished it.   I tig brazed the hole, did the body work and repainted. I used 3m tape on the emblems.
