CB550 Help! (Electronic Ignition/timing)
« on: December 31, 2021, 03:09:58 PM »
Looking for help on my 78 CB550. Just rebuilt the engine and rewired the whole bike from scratch for the first time and everything is working as it should.

I also installed a PAMCO electronic ignition. The bike is getting good spark and fuel but it does not want to start. With the electronic ignition, should I be able to install it and start the bike and then set timing afterwards? Or set the timing before? When trying to start it occasionally makes a “whomp” and backfire sound.

Trying to weigh out my options to get to the bottom of this. Any help or advice is appreciated

You have toget the timing close for it to start. Never seen a pamco so not sure what you change and how it works but setup should be in the instructions

I did that before giving it a try. I’m gonna double check and make sure I’m doing it correctly. Hopefully it’s something silly I messed up on

Sure you got the coil leads headed to the right pair?

iirc, the pamco plate and advancer are marked.  So you can get things set up at tdc within a degree or two of fire.  The timing light helps to verify the advancer mechanism works above 3000rpm.

Rotor correctly mounted, not 180* wrong?
If it is, swap the wires to coils and see if it starts.
