Mag wheels spoke paint Q? +Ign. switch tab washers.
« on: March 18, 2022, 04:56:34 PM »
I recently got a set of Lester mags, they need a little cleanup and I have considered glass bead or soda blasting the centers to remove the black and try a slight gold tint like my Firebird's American mags came with in 1971, also like some similar 6 spoke bike mags I've seen recently.
The question, is that opening a can of worms trying to get the black out of the crevices and pores in the spokes?
  Has anyone actually tried it?

Don…. Maybe try vapour blasting? Just saw some parts that came out of a new, local shop! Spotless, better than new! I’m going to take the top end of my engine there, after I strip it all down. And the side  and cam cover (before polishing).

I spent all day yesterday cleaning the inside of the rims and polishing the outside of rims. I used a poly wire wheel, a flap wheel but mostly a flap combo of 80 grit and red scotchbrite on a die grinder. That's my favorite for heavy cleaning and pre-polish prep.
Next up, I used a couple different rag wheels with come Green Dragon aluminum polish. The original was great, the latest one is a bit different. I blended the two mixing the dried out old bottle and the new one. I'm still convinced aluminum is made out of dirt.
I saw a blasted Lester on ebay and decided not to go there. It looks awful.

There’s no substitute for hard labour! In one of your posts (a while back), you mentioned a lock ring or washer that goes under the ignition switch and stops it from rotating? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one! How does it work????

I had a Campagnolo front wheel I planned to blast off the paint. It had got 2k paint back in the early 80's.

It is really important which media to use.
Walnut shells was the way if I remember correctly. Magnesium is a little bit picky.

I traded it to get other needed CB750 parts.

It's number 22 in this picture, it has two tabs, one orients with a slot on the key switch and another with a notch in the bracket. It keeps the switch from turning with the key, they usually get left off for some reason. I'd guess, moving the switch up top like we did so often.

They do disappear! In all the cb750s I’ve had, I don’t recall seeing one! Thanks.

I found two of the tab washers in the tote of nuts and bolts that came with my purchase last fall. I also had more than two bikes missing them lol.
