Can someone tell me why there is a nail on my CB550?
« on: March 05, 2007, 10:29:45 PM »
I have a 75 CB550 Ok I'm not an expert but the pic below shows a nail that the previous owner had used to replace a bolt or a cotter pin on the left hand side of the rear wheel bolt. Anyone know what is suppose to be there? Pics would be awesome.

It should have a split pin in place of the nail, buy them at any bike shop.

Too funny Bro. I have cursed people for doing that but have done it myself in a pinch, Typically, use the pin once. If you bend it over then pitch it and replace it on the next service.

An 8D common is the proper size but galvies will work. ;D

When I cleaned my carbs I couldn't find split pins for the choke linkage arms, so I just straightened a paper clip, cut in pieces and used them in place of the split pins. Later I bought them from Honda -ouch, a little later I bought a set of different sizes for about 4 euros-, and keep then stored for when the next carb disassembly comes. It may be never, and maybe when I need them I won't remember where they are...

I prefer  "R"  clips They are quicker to use and quite safe.

That's what I usually use to :)

In my case it might be connected to the fact that I get them FOC from work :)

My brother had a CB450 w/ a stripped shift spindle. To replace it, cases had tp be split or something complicated to a teenager. So, he drilled a hole in the spindle and stuck a nail thru it and the shifter. Problem was, the nail would break or fall out every few hours. So, always he carried a POCKETFUL OF NAILS whenever he went for a ride.

If there's one thing I don't want to go down with, it's a pocketfull of nails.

I use the hitch or "R" pins on mine.  You can get a selection of them for a few bucks in the HELP section of any auto parts store.

I use one as well. I picked the one with the largest cross section that would still fit through the axle hole. Makes adjustments a lot easier and faster. I use mini's on the carb linkage as well.
