Greetings from the Hall of Fame city
« on: July 20, 2022, 05:33:26 AM »
Yes, I live in the home of the football HOF, but have zero interest in football. My name is Eric, I'm knocking on 47 y.o.

I picked up a '76 CB750A from my FIL, who hadn't been able to ride it. Last time it was registered was '05!

It started out as just get it running, but as with everything mechanical I am starting to fall in love with it.

I cleaned the tank, rebuilt the carbs & accel pump, replaced the intake boots and clamps, rebuilt the caliper and MC, cleaned the coil grounds, re-terminated the plug wires, cleaned and set the points, adjusted the static timing, etc. I have been getting parts from Parts 'n More, (found via this forum) I have been happy with everything.

I planned on selling it. There seems to be a notion that I will get killed on a motorcycle. I'm pretty sure I have my wife convinced to at least let me get a helmet, register it for a year, and go from there.

I have never had, or even ridden a street bike before. However I spent many years riding dirt bikes, but that's been 25 years or so.

So that's some of the story! The bike is really nice to ride (although I have nothing to compare it to). Probably could use a carb sync, but pretty darn smooth!

Thanks for all the info here on the forum.

Edit: added a pic of the bike, it didn't attach the first time.

I had it out last night, its running really well as a whole. At cruising speed it feels like it might be cutting in and out, like a surge OR it could just be wind gust resistance, I haven't figured it out. Had a good time though!

Welcome from Texas.   Yes, get a helmet as when riding, remember that other drivers will not see you so ride defensively.  Have fun!

Welcome aboard Eric
It looks like your fil kept it well.

The bike does seem to be in good shape. It had a wind jammer and side hard bags that I have removed.

It's a shame that it's been repainted, but it's been indoors for years so things seem to be cleaning up.

Someone has been in to the engine, at least the cam cover, because the screws are rounded/stripped. You wonder what the history is..

I have since picked up a helmet, and I try my best to heed the advice about other drivers. I originally hoped to use the bike to commute back and forth to work and save gas, but the way people drive i certainly am not feeling up to the highway!

Welcome to the group Eric  :) There's a bunch of good members here who have 99.9% of the answers you'll need:just ask  ;) I like your 750 Automatic,it looks well cared for.
Do you have new tires on it? if not I highly recommend you have a look at the sidewalls, date codes, etc. on them.

The tires are not new, and I really should've already checked the date codes instead of just riding it around. I know better than that: Being frugal is one thing, but safety should be paramount.

I had a go at syncing carbs a couple weeks ago. I ordered a cheap 4 gauge setup (knowing what I was getting). After reading about it first I calibrated each gauge with the idling manifold vacuum on one of my cars.
Here's the makeshift setup. They were pretty far out, the bike idles sooo much better (not sure if the syncing affects the entire range or not).
The gauge in cylinder 3 seemed much more fluttery than the others, but I was able to eyeball-average it. It could be the cheap gauge, or since the bike sat so long I think it's feasible that I could have a valve not sealing properly.

I figured I'll put a few miles on it and revisit.

I was out riding this weekend and I didn't think I was gonna make it home! I thought it was a fuel delivery problem the way it felt.
During my troubleshooting I checked the pipe temps with my laser. 2 and 3 were a bit cool so that got me thinking about ignition.
I pulled the points cover and sure enough, the set of points for 2-3 were sparking like crazy!
I took out the new condensers that I got from Parts 'N More, put in the OEM's, and she's running great again.

That was a learning experience, now I know what to expect with a condenser failure. Good thing Honda split the ignition or I'd have been hoofing it.

Welcome. Just an after thought...be sure to put a fan on the front of the engine when you sync. Don't want to over heat that motor. A good rule of thumb which has kept me out of trouble...don't trust anyone on the road. If a driver is looking you in the eyes...don't trust that he sees you or will wait for you. Last...stay out of the cars blind spots. Might want to consider taking the cycle safety course. Never to good to take it.

And you know, the only reason I ordered the condensers was to bump my order enough to get free shipping! I do electronics for a living so I thought "well a condenser is a capacitor, and capacitors go bad with age" so yeah, lesson learned.

Ah, I forgot to mention I had a furnace squirrel cage blower running at the front of the bike during the syncing. Definitely important!
