8mm crush washers for fork rebuild
« on: August 26, 2022, 10:45:38 AM »
I need two of the 8mm washers that go on the bottom bolt of the forks (not the drain plug on the side....the Allen bolt underneath).
I refuse to pay $15 for two genuine Honda washers. The copper washers from Harbor Freight don't crush and seal.
Surely someone has found a source locally. Do any auto parts stores, home improvement stores, etc., carry the correct size crush washer? Where should I begin my search?

If you still have the originals just flat file them relatively smooth again, then heat with a propane torch to glowing red hot to anneal them and quench them in a water bath and your good to go.

I've also annealed lots of copper sealing washers. No leaks yet, if they are too deformed replace them.

Rebuilt many forks, always reused without doing anything, beyond knocking off a high spot every now and then.

Never had one leak.

If they were leaking, you can get copper washers at ace, or autozone (at least I can here).

This has been the way I've always done it.

BUT...for whatever reason, this bike, that has been off the road for at least 20 years, has decided to leak from the bottom of the forks while sitting still, waiting it's turn in my garage.

 I've always reused them before.

Got any local foreign car (British usually) parts suppliers locally, with products usually has a small set of drawers of these kinds of things and more.
Was lucky to have a couple of these kinds of shops when I lived in Columbus Ohio.
Ace Hardware would be where I would start looking here in Southern AZ.

$15? Where is that? At CMSNL € 2,- a piece.

Yeah, but nobody is shipping them for free. It would cost me $16 total to get two washers shipped.

If a standard copper washer wont seal you have a bigger problem

I bought a bag of either 25 or 50 from Amazon for like $10. I bought the small 6mm for the drain plug at the same time.

I buy solid copper seals from these guys. I use 6mm,8mm,10mm. But 20 of each and they will last a while.

good suggestion -- they are out of the m6 kind needed for cb550 valve covers tho.

I bought an assortment of metric copper washers off Amazon.  I used 8mm for exactly the job you're doing.  The only thing was the O.D. was slightly larger than the well, so I put a bunch of them on a bolt with a nut at the end and then knocked a mil off all the way around on a belt sander.  Only took a minute and now I have a handful that will fit.  Good luck.
