Mouse Deterent
« on: October 17, 2025, 06:14:38 AM »
Last Winter some mice damaged the wiring harness on my Volvo C30. A few years ago, one cleaned the foam padding from an old motorcycle seat and laid it all around the base of the single carb on my 1980 FORD F350!

Looking for something to put under the hood and inside these vehicles. Anyone ever used these? Other stuff? My wife suggested I spray some “Bounce drier sheets” with peppermint spray and save a few bucks!

I had mice in my workshop a few years back. I used Tom Cat poison traps.
They worked. I leave them out and check them once in a while for any activity.
In my garage that is attached to the house I had a couple of mice. I used old fashioned snap traps to catch them. These country mice aren't too smart.

Recently a friend of mine was having trouble with rats eating the wiring on her car at her apartment. She tried virtually every rodent "deterrent" suggestion she could find.
Nothing worked.
I pointed out that her parking space was only about 50 feet from the dumpster and that's what was attracting the rodents to the area. She moved her car to the other side of the building and no more rodent issues.

Hey John...we have rodents out at the Ranch, it's impossible not too, and really wouldnt be a good thing to kill them all [would impact the ecosystem] but we dont want them on/in the cars.  We put "Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent" in each of the cars ...

https://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Cab-Botanical-Rodent-Repellent/dp/B00L236OMW/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=2NEQNB478774L&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bGyIbIXHmE2vbhR7ZvKczTR3UUjnqX73q1PdjovE8qwC1gAx1YbmnTN-_q1F1zZjU4XwRvZoQeKP6BnFlgRTqy-JUozjOrVfLX8SqwPDhVm0spnqnSdHquJTZZflzypWd85jJ4nHAHjIY2tmH_iEkeLHCOUke0-cJfrG8pAncTRtMCvnMnDa5dl5tGoPFlXwiLNhy28Lwd0_5GJcKENZsej-hfzoWEImqeWrb_dvfSQZwvoysNliFIapFs6POY7jfsHODwbcXrps1gwbHOQTJlzM-X2mkL_Jssq_y3rN0ls.Gwn7EeBPZsOPXxsk9kAKA9gHN6phVtoDZda1RZEeZj8&dib_tag=se&keywords=rodent%2Brepellent&qid=1760709348&rdc=1&sprefix=rodent%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

And also bait in the barns...

As far as I know, we have not had an issue with them chewing on the car wiring, but a couple of the battery maintainer's wiring has been chewed on. I dont really understand that, they are attracted to electricity?

And we have used dryer sheets in the past too, they seem to work.  But I don't really like them in the car when being driven as they can fly out if driving a convertible.

Here at the house, we never see mice as our daughters cat takes care of that!

It's definitely a plus, having a couple of free range cats can cure a variety of rodent problems. Between squirrels, chipmunks, mice, moles and voles, they're tough to stay on top of in my neighborhood. We have 2 cats that roam around in our neighborhood and it keeps the rodent population in check. They drive our shih tzu crazy, but thats another story.

shed or garage...I use the "bucket"
I thought moth balls worked, prior to the "bucket" until I found nesting/poop next to a pack.
dryer sheets, haven't tried them....peppermint oil is used in my vinegar/peppermint spider away concoction for my pontoon boat and really made a drastic difference. So give it a shot.
However, it looks like you found a solution.

I've used Bounce dryer sheets with surprising effectiveness (and they're cheap) in the motorhome, garage on occasion, and in the basement when a screen got opened (maybe by mice?) down there. Another [surprising] very effective scent has been mulberry candles, just left in these same places. They lasted for over 10 years before 'troubles' began, looking for some more of them even now.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The demons are repulsed when a man does good. Use that.
Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

I've seen mice run across dryer sheets layed on a mantel in a camp that I stayed in a couple months. Maybe they weren't Bounce brand???

Ive only had a couple of mice problems over the years, nothing like eating wiring or such though,if your setting snap traps I set three in a triangle close together,we have mice with sharp reflexes that jump away as the trap triggers, having them in a triangle the little pests land or set foot in another one close by and get snared, nyuck, nyuck, nyuck!

I use mothballs and mice/rat poisons..
The mothballs are let in the bags and placed inside parked equipment..seem to keep them out of the AC unit and cabin filters..setting the bags out when using the equipment..

The Volvo C30 has a nice, neat snorkel intake for the large airfilter box. I usually stuff it with a wad of steel wool. That seems to have kept them out of there………

That's what I used to keep the squirrels out of the eaves of my shop. It worked.

My buddy likes to feed the deer at his home and kept a bag of corn in his garage.  A few weeks ago, he pulled out one of his cars and was letting it warm up, we noticed abnormal smoke coming out of the exhaust. Once nearby, I could see that both exhaust pipes had corn sitting in them, WTF?!  Apparently mice were making their winter stash...

EDIT: pic added...

A few years ago, I tried to save the pan from a very mouse eaten seat. I'm pretty sure I caught bubonic plage from it. I was sick over a week.  Be aware and get a mask, use antiseptic cleaners and wash your hands or just toss it.
