550 cam chain with 650 cam. sprocket trouble
« on: March 04, 2023, 12:13:47 PM »
Hey,
Caught on a snag for my 550 engine. I'm trying to get the cam chain onto the sprocket with a 650 cam and brand new chain. But I cannot get it installed there's doesn't seem to be enough slack. I've tried as many tips as I've read.
Even installing the sprocket before the head didn't work as the cam didn't fit into it. Attached is how close I'm able to get it. What should I do? I am thinking when the weather is in the 70s maybe the metal will have loosened up for it to fit. Or maybe ditch this chain and get a new unlinked one?

You're using the 550 sprocket, right?

The factory manual says to come in from the RH side, but I've always found it easier to come in from the LH side.

You turned the cam chain adjuster screw and locked it in place to give you maximum slack, right.

Another set of hands is helpful, too.

1 if you split the engine to replace camchain did you fit the the chain cushion wrong side of chain(easy to do)
2 if you linked chain are you sure you had enough links

The cushion goes inside the chain not outside which looks wrong as you build it but isnt

Another set of hands is helpful, too.

Yeah: if you find a set, can I rent them from you once in a while?
