'74 CB750 Center Stand Install or Not?
« on: March 24, 2023, 04:53:01 AM »
I need to replace the fork seals on my '74 CB750, but I have no way to lift the bike up. So I purchased a center stand and was looking into installation (pennies in the spring) when I ran across a post that stated to just keep the CS at home and use it temporarily to lift the bike when needed. Does that work? The bike has 4 HM341 exhaust pipes. Do the right side pipes need to be removed to install the CS? Is removing the exhaust straight forward? Any other suggestions or tips?

Yes, that works.

Having a center stand is very convenient. You will use it a lot.

Either permanent or temporary, the pivot tube still needs to slide through the center stand and brackets to mount it. I'm not sure if the stock pipes need to be removed or not, it is a possibility.
If so, the difficulty factor depends on how tightly the pipes are stuck on the exhaust nipples at the head.

Such a simple question but it really hit me. First instinct is drop it. Weight, style….but then I flick back and forth. Center stand comes in so darn handy. I have done some sketchy things because there was no  center stand, or paddock stand avail. (2x4 under kickstand base and car jack under frame on the other side) ugh. A removable center stand? Good luck DOooooooNnnnnnn

I take it the bike did not come with the stand. Guys took it off for aesthetics or weight for racing. I agree with the majority it does come in real handy for working on the bike. Even oil changes you want the bike upright and secure while working on it. Let us know how you come out.

Hi David, I ride a K4 with stock pipes and having a center stand provides for easier maintenance.  Tire changes, brakes, chain and sprocket replacement and oil changes are so much easier to do. When I park my bike and using the side stand is questionable, I always have a more stable option.  Best of luck on what choice you decide to do.

I purchased the center stand from Z1 Parts. I removed the right most exhaust pipe (cylinder #4 ?) and that created clearance to install the center stand pin. I was able to get the stand installed without much trouble and I plan to leave it installed. I do have a question, there is interference between the center stand and left side rear foot peg. I have attached a pic to show how the stand hits the foot peg mount. The interference prevents the center stand from retracting fully. Looking for input on what is causing the interference and how to correct it.

Does the muffler have the rubber pad to stop the centerstand?

Yes, the muffler has a rubber pad for the center stand. The stand hits the foot peg mount and does not rest on the rubber pad. I think the foot peg mount is blocking the CS. Or the center stand is not long enough to clear the foot peg mount.

That appears to be an aftermarket centerstand?

You'll probably have to bend the toe-hold lever back a little bit (have someone hold the bike and use a long pipe for the leverage) so it will fold up behind the passenger footpeg bracket. You'll also either have to fabricate some sort of rubber stop on the new stand so it rests against the frame without banging, clanging, and bouncing while riding: it was originally supposed to hit that little rubber block on the bottom of the #2 pipe as seen in your picture. You might be able, after adjusting the toe-hold arm back, to put a short piece of rubber hose (like heater hose from a car engine) on the toe-hold so it rests quietly on the bottom of the pipe(s) and doesn't 'clank' on road bumps.

Could someone post a picture of their center stand in the full up position and showing clearance of the rear foot peg?  That way I will know how the stand should fit. I may contact Z1 Parts about it.

Don't really have any stand closeups, but you can see the adequate space my OEM stand provides on the K1. Click the pic to make it larger...

I took a pic of the space between the CS and rubber stop, while the CS was contacting the rear footpeg mount. I am not sure of what to do next. The picture from Johnie shows the CS resting below the rear footpeg. The CS on my bike wants to rest above and behind the rear footpeg. Has anyone seen a stock CS that rests above and behind the rear footpeg? As suggested above I could wrap the CS with rubber so that it does contact the rubber stop. Any down side to that approach? Other ideas?

Can't you just rotate the footrest a touch further to the right, so the stand misses it?

Did you have your camera in portrait mode? (That picture looks backwards)
I'd say the center stand is not the correct stand. It looks too short and maybe that is why it's hitting the peg and not the rubber pad?

Do you have the link to the z1 stand?

I tried to reposition the left rear footpeg to get the center stand to fully retract to the rubber pad. No go. Then I removed the rear foot peg and the center stand immediately came to rest on the rubber stop. See pic. I spoke with Z1 Parts and sent them the pics. They put a center stand on a CB in their shop and see the problem. They are going to look at their inventory and give me a call tomorrow.

Z1 Parts has issued an RMA and will send me a refund after I return the center stand.

newday777 - thanks, I will send you a message.

I think they sent me a CB center stand but it sounded like there was a possible fitment problem with them. They wanted my CS so they could compare it to the others in stock.
