Control cables
« on: June 22, 2023, 07:26:11 AM »
I was marked down at a motorcycle show for not having grey cables on my 1973 Honda CB 350F.   All the research I've done indicates they are black. Any one know for sure?

Welcome aboard the forum Kasindy
I know that the 350 twins has the gray cables but I'm almost 100% sure all the Fours had black cables.
Maybe the judges were confused about it.....

I just talked with a local friend who has a 350F and concurs on black cables in 71+ on all the Fours.
Email David Silver in the UK as he has a 72 350F.

welcome to the world of vintage motorcycle judging....and experts and judges who can be wrong.
If you want to continue showing your bike and be able to defend and support your position and avoid surprises, as you are going to come across this all the time, begin to do more research including vintage magazines, honda ads, original parts books, etc. ....and keep these articles.
This is exactly what I have had to do. I have come across "judges" that did not know that honda produced Sunrise metalflake orange painted parts as a factory color. They would say, "nice custom paint ".....really, and they're judges?....some are arrogant, most will listen and having proof helps....
.....as an example. ....Concerning US imports, there isn't any such thing as a 1973 honda 350F as per Honda.
Depending on your frame and engine #'s, it is a CB350FO, released in 05/72 and sold through 1973...
1974 saw the release of the 1974 model CB350F 1, which is the first year of Honda's adaption of model year designation. ....pics below...
Also, even though the pics are black and white, your cables show black and the CL 77 at the top you can see are gray.....
additional proof your bike came with black cables.......
be careful of internet opinions and "facts" without evidence.....

Thanx all.    The bike will be shown next year in the same venue.  I believe I now have enough bullets to prove that this bike came from the factory with black cables and other models did not.   Now I have to figure out what factory inner tube air caps might have looked like.

to research that...first, look in your manual . There may be a close up pic of a wheel that shows the cap.

look for vintage repair manuals (including chilton, haynes) that might show the wheel and cap.
and again, look for vintage honda ads, and vintage bike magazines of your bike that might show it.
Honda used bridgestone tubes so vintage pics of those...and yokohama?..ebay?...

Another I found after I posted earlier.
It might be an Italian brochure?

well..the fun begins...from a vintage honda shop I visit and the owner...
..it could've been any one  of a cap like these. Since there is no honda part #, technically there isn't a honda cap...
.....however....
we found dome caps that had an "H" on it....plain dome, caps with the word pacific on it, caps with a raised "tit"..."..caps with border around the dome......one cap said "matsuura"......
It appears caps that say pacific are from a  bridgestone tube. He had an nos bridgestone tube, still in package but probably from mid to later 80's, but the cap had pacific on it...so there's that....
He feels the cap with just "H" on it isn't a factory cap because he thinks they would have tons of them around.
He remembers when assembling and messing with these bikes in the day, that the caps were domed and had that raised ridge.....since no one cared 50+ years ago, memories are vague....

some pics...
remember...the caps came with the tubes...

the owner's dad had this shop, was one of the first 100 honda dealers in the country. He grew up working in the shop, assembling bikes, riding them, etc. He knows a lot and will tell you he doesn't know everything.....he won't bs you if he doesn't know specifically...like some do.....so he can't say what cap is what....
these pics show maybe a third of what he has.........

Although I did find some Bridgestone Super Speed tires to spoon on,  I had to go with new tubes.  The caps were flat across the top with the needle valve remover.   I'm going to go with domed caps until  I find some, or just take a 1/4 point hit.  Now at least I know what to look for.  Thanx for taking time to research tube caps.

yep....the flat, black plastic cap with the tire tool seems to be a later bridgestone.......it was never vintage 70's...

curious....what bike show?.....what judges?.....was it an AMCA meet?.....where they specifically honda judges?

you found super speed tires?........

The bike was judged at an AMCA event.  As the trend toward vintage Japanese bikes grow, they represented about half the bikes judged. Low mileage fifty year old Bridgestone tires and Stanley headlight were taken from another bike I  intend to ride.

amca...yeah...well, I mentioned my story....they are struggling with finding qualified judges.
you can dispute the deduction.
I'd be curious to know what other negatives they alledge/found. Maybe they were wrong....original, unrestored category?....
don't know the history, but you might be surprised about certain original things about the bike..
