SeaFoam, Yea or Nay?
« on: September 20, 2023, 11:50:34 AM »
There should be no shortage of opinion on this one; Who likes SeaFoam, and does it actually do anything? Thanks.

I'd say no, but I try to use top tier non-ethanol most of the time.

I tried it straight to melt carb bowl varnish with no apparent result but when my lawn tractor gets gummed up, (black smoke and no power) a dose of Seafoam in the tank will have it cleared up within a few minutes of run time.
I was sent to borrow a generator/welder but it wouldn't start, the shop tool guy gave it a dose of seafoam and cranked it a few times, then we got a cup of coffee and a shop tour and in a few minutes it started right up.
I agree, it's not scientific and purely anecdotal evidence but it's my story and I like the stuff.  A friend uses it in his fuel injector cleaner/tester. He likes it too, used to be a VP at Holley.

For a fuel additive I have used Startron Enzyme for the past 10 years with absolutely no fuel issues whatsoever in anything from a stationary generator to my beloved bikes. That way, I also know that ethanol is well and truly out of my fuel.

I put it in fuel, late Fall. I don’t rely on it but figure it can’t hurt! Stabil is my first choice.

I used it in a 2002 Nissan Frontier truck, with HORRIBLE results. According to Youtubers, it would dissolve the carbon in the intake manifold and clear an EGR warning code.
However, on my truck, it apparently ruined the MAP sensor in the throttle body, resulting in a total replacement of the throttle body and $ 1100 repair bill. After that, the motor never ran as well as before.
Needless to say, I am not touching that stuff ever again.

Nay….

Only miracle in a can that performed as advertised, Cummins 3885737 injector nozzle cleaner used with Cummins 3885739 recirculating kit. Now discontinued of course…

John Deere Stabil works good.

Marvel Mystery Oil unstuck a hydraulic lifter in my 86 Monte Carlo just like it did with sticky exhaust valves in my brothers Ford flatheads. The Monte had an internal intake leak that let tiny drips of coolant into the valley, when it was -10*F and an hour from home it finally let go so I knew what to fix.
There are some snake oils that do perform a function.

About 2 months ago my Explorer (almost 200k miles on it) started intermittently dropping the engine idle to a very slow RPM. Shutting off the engine and restarting didn't help. I got a can of Seafoam and ran it thru the gas and the problem went away in about 50 miles. That's the only time I've used it.

So far. ;)
