Simple question about Key chain
« on: October 03, 2023, 08:38:24 AM »
Okay I know this sounds like a stupid question but going to run it by everyone.  I have a 72 CB500 and I am trying to find a key chain that will not either a melt against my head pipes or scratch them.  What do some of you use?  Thanks

One key and a leather fob is my favorite. My GL1000 has two keys but I don't let a lot of weight hang off of the switch.

My favourite style too. I got several of these on EBay from a vendor in the UK. Red, black or gold enamel.

For my CB550F i have a little purple number-four-poolball as a keychain (and for my Honda VT600 V2 i have a blue number-two-ball).

For my other small Hondas i have silver necklace charms, silver earrings and fingerrings i found on the ground, small bearings or italian cornicellos. For my Honda Wave (innova?) i have a red, white and blue bowtie (it was built in Thailand, not Japan), and for my Honda Elite Deluxe with retractable headlight i have a 9mm cartridge (Sarah Connor drives one of these in the beginning of the original 'Terminator' movie).

More important than the attachment is the chain itself, in my opinion: i always use these ball chains used for military 'dog tags', rather than chain rings. they are easier to shove into / pull out of tight riding pant's pockets because they collapse and do not use a lot of space in your pocket. But they still add enough mass and 'feel', and together with a small ornament making a bare key complete.

i started using those ball chains since i saw in an under-dash shot of a car chase in 'Vanishing point', that Kowalski did too. The spare key of his brand new Challenger was very briefly seen dangling off a ball chain from the one stuck in the ignition lock. Unfortunately i cant afford Kowalskis Alpine white Challenger, but i can afford his key chain...

By all means: keep it light! Thousands of ignition switches the world over are destroyed by too much weight. The dangling makes it even worse.

I bought one off of Ebay that was Faux leather fairly light but it touches my left header and has basically melted!   So I have seen rubber and real leather and wondering if rubber will melt again the pipe if it touches it.   I obviously need something shorter.    Thanks for all of the responses.

My preferred style as well! I still have the first one I got in 1977. It has the old style wing on it.

Drodg, most important is not to be tempted to switch the IGN to OFF or P whilst still rolling. Key can exit easily then and, as a consequence, have you scour the turmac behind you. Don't ask me how I know. ;D

When the locks get old the key will come out in any position and get lost, dont ask

Of course my issue is finding a key tag that doesn't rest upon that left far side pipe at a stop.   My one I have now is melted!
