Has anyone else had BaT require them to list their bike with no reserve as a requisite for them accepting your listing?

Don't know about bikes, but on another forum I frequent (Mazda Miata), I see where people mention the same thing.

It could be good or bad, just depends on what you expect.  The last hour of the auction is what counts, from what I have seen on BAT.

I was just surprised at their response. There is nothing in their guidlines that states that their selection process is dependent on the reserve. In fact they state, " Each seller has the ability to lower their reserve while the auction is live." I'm passing for now.

it ensures some kind of money for them, if everything had a reserve then they would probably never collect a 5%. I've submitted two bikes to them and they suggested no reserve on both and basically said that was the only route forward. I just sold my 550 to gentlemen in Missouri and he utilized bat for shipping.

 They tried to get me to go no reserve on the two auctions I did, but I refused. Maybe they've changed since then?

I listed with no reserve -my observation was that it did not seem to make much of difference in the sale prices. An interesting note is that if you list with a reserve and the item does not reach the reserve then BAT has the option of buying it at the reserve price. Not sure how often they do that but it is something to be aware of.

I saw that too. I suppose if the 5% buyer fee substantially covers the difference, they’re still making money. I passed on BaT. I’ve listed the bike on CL, FB and have submitted it to Hemmings auction. We’ll see what happens.

I thought it was funny that the BaT rep stated “ but you should be confident it will bid to its fair market value on BaT”. Of course anytime you put something out there for sale, it brings its fair market value from that audience, at that time and place. Lol, of course we all want to reach the one, or better yet two people who are willing to pay more than fair market value. That being said, have you noticed how many bikes and cars go through multiple auctions on Bat?

I am in the process of listing my RD350 and yes they would only list without a reserve. It is a gamble for sure. If the bike is fairly rare or is in very good condition then it should bring in a proper bid. I also chuckled at there comment about be assured your vehicle should bring a fair market value. It's a test, if the RD is bid above what I would want then the CB550 may be listed. I don't do Facebook and Craigslist brings in the scammers although I have sold a few on Craigslist with some good results. My friend list his BSA Goldstar a while back and they would only let him have a reserve of $15,000 but it sold for $35,000. You never know who is looking.




He will be listing his 68 DT1 soon, which I did all the work on it.

What are you looking to get for the RD?

Im hoping  over 6,000 considering it has a Vape system, Pro X pistons, Stage 1 Reed Valves, new paint and pretty much everything new. But you never know. Most of them were around 4500 - 5000 without anything done to them and a few over 7000

What year is the RD? It's a beautiful bike. Back in the day I bought a '75. Kick myself for selling it. I guess you've had it apart. What is the vape system? Many of the BaT people seem to be interested in originality.

I had an orange DT-1. don't remember what year it was but it was a sturdy all around ride. A good all around bike for Florida in while i was in high school.

Mines been off the road a couple years, need to service the clutch and get it back out. 

The last RD sold on BaT was a '75 that sold for $10K and all 10 listed since May '22 were listed with no reserve...

I found the 74 CB550 riding through South Dakota. I also picked up a XJ550 Yamaha form one of his friends and restored that also. Pretty much did my normal thing. Disassembled completely. Paint, new pipes, almost new everything. Engine wise , new primary, cam chain, tensioner, reground cams hardened rockers, upgraded to 78 rocker cover with pinned shafts, pistons, rings, vapor blast, rebuilt carbs. It's actually one of the smoothest bikes I have, but just don't ride it enough and need to thin the heard.

There's a LOT of my Transistor Ignitions on the RD350s out there, too.

Don - they were known as the "Giant Killer" as they were faster than many bikes with bigger displacement.
A buddy in high school had one, I will never forget riding it, was the fastest thing I had ever ridden at the time and nearly lost it when the front wheel came off the ground!
