Cb550 speedo gear stripped screw
« on: September 16, 2024, 09:49:58 PM »
Hey guys, I was replacing my speedometer and tachometer and I realized that the screw on the speedo gear on the front wheel was stripped. Unfortunately the previous owner’s speedo cable sheared and the lower end is left in the speedo gear housing, but the stripped screw is impossible to get out. I thought about drilling it out but the assembly is not in two pieces so I am not sure how to get the screw out after. If anyone has any ideas on how to get this screw out I would love to hear them as a new speedo gear is 110-250$ and the one on the bike is functional. Thanks!

Remove the speedo drive.
Apply a little heat, not too much, and some penetrating oil, then try an impact driver with a JIS bit.
At least that's how I have done it more than once.

Oh yeah I didn't think about applying heat, I will give it a shot. If that doesn't work I think I will try a drill bit extractor. Thanks.

Don't apply heat, the speedo has internal seals and it's likely you'll melt them.

I've always had decent success by using a centre punch, use it to make a indent near the edge of the screwhead, keep hitting the punch until the hole is a couple of mms deep, then hit the punch sideways in the hole, keep the angle quite steep or you'll just slide out of the hole, clearly drive it in the direction needed to unscrew the screw. The combination of the shock and the irresistible force driving it in the direction needed quite often works. Best done either in situ or in a vice. If removed a little oil down the threads from the reverse can help. Those screws are often not that tight, it's the damage to the screw head slots caused by rusting that makes them difficult to remove. Try a stainless screw in there so as to try and avoid it happening again and of course some nickel/copper grease on the threads.

If the punch hole ends up being useless after a few hits, just make another etc

I should test if a torx bit can fit rather tight if hammer on it. Where it sit . Not too heavy metal hammer...
Then remove the screw.

Torx bit useful to remove thread inserts too. No problem if the torx bit will be damaged... ;D

A hand driven JIS impact driver is your best choice in tools to have for our JIS screws that are on our 1970s bikes. The screws are Not Philips screws, there is a difference and the JIS tips will grab that ham fisted, fubared screw that some rookie had their hands on.

+1...stated above....get/use proper JIS bits. And a hand driven impact driver is a must at least in my '70's vintage honda world. That screw will pop right out.

A way of doing it is to hacksaw a slot accross the screw and use a straight screwdriver this will put two slots in the surround though, impact frequently works BUT i have seen broken drives from this

Good call. An impact driver and JIS bits are very handy tools for working on old motorcycles.

If the impact doesn't work I use the left hand drill bits. The screw usually comes out just before the head pops off. The heat from drilling seems to break loose the corrosion. I've removed a lot of stripped case cover screws this way.

If you use a worn down cutting disc (smaller diameter)it cuts into the outer rim less.

That’s a tacho drive with a pan head screw, the speedo drive uses a recessed head. You can still cut the slot but you will damage the casing

That’s right, with a smaller cutting wheel you will do less inevitable damage.  Sorry for a lousy picture choice, I didn’t have one of the speedo drive I repaired that way after other attempts failed.

Good to hear. Use that impact every time you you need to loosen a screw.

Don't however use it on the tacho drive screw which secures the cable or you'll break the drive housing.

Got at mine today, was stripped by somebody before me.  I put penetrant on it, left it for a day.  Impact driver with #2 & #3 wouldn't bite.  Torx bit wouldn't bite.  Got a small chisel put a notch in it and tried a center punch and a pin punch... no go.  Left hand drill, 5/32" I think, got down the bottom of the head and figured I'd stop.  1/4" left hand drill to put a small chamfer on the first hole... small chisel made a mark on one side and another 180 degrees across.  Drove a flat blade screwdriver bit into the slot... then impact driver got it out.  Yay!

Got mine out last evening.  Bit of a bear.  Much impacting/drilling then the 'easy out' finally got it.  Destroyed my speedo cable in the process.  Ah well. New cable and screw coming up.  New tires were worth it!  Bike is new to me.  Tires were ancient.  3.25-19 front, 4.00-18 rear BT-46.  Feels like a new bike vs the ancient squared off 120/90 rear!
