Back on the project. After a very extended delay, trying to make room in the garage and fund this project by working on an older Yamaha, it is gone now and able to focus on the CB500.
I've got the frame cleaned up from rust, dirt, and flaking paint, holes from odd fairing bracket welded and filled in.
My overall philosophy (probably not a popular one) is to try and maintain the history of these bikes, from its journey and previous owners. Mechanically, as with my previous rebuild, I strive for it to be perfect and running as smooth as the day it left the factory. But, for example, I don't intend for the paint to be aesthetically perfect on the frame, tank, or side panels. I only want it to 1) stop rust and not rust further 2) sealed from the elements, but to show some of the patina and history. You might see some of this with the frame rebuild.
I'm now on to the suspension, wheels, and brakes.
