Updated parts source list?
« on: January 18, 2025, 05:06:23 PM »
So, kids are older and the time has come to finally do some extensive rebuild work on my 78 750k.
I looked to see what I could find for parts sources, but it's a really old thread, last touched in 09. Some of the links are dead.
Is there anything more updated than that?

I see cyclexchange is still going, and I have no doubt their parts are totally great, they even tell you so, but their prices seem to be getting a bit steep.

Depends on what you are going to do I guess.  I hear Cycle exchange is good, but I have no experience with them, and all parts from any vendor is expensive these days.  I think cycle exchange mainly deals in high performance parts, but not sure.

I try to get quite a few parts from South Sound Honda (Washington state), vintagecb750, CMS, David Silver spares, JTMARKS (ebay seller) and used parts from wherever on ebay or here.

What are you looking to do?  If engine work, are you doing the work yourself?
Need machine work performed?

Well, the goal is pretty much a full resto. The bike has been out of commission since 2012. So, all the seals, gaskets, and rubber bit will need replacing. It was starting to weep around the head, as is common. I've had a once over piston kit for years, so my plan was to get it bored for those pistons. Probably a 341 or 341a webcam. I'm not really trying to boost power like crazy, I have an fz6 for that.

So, I don't think I'll need rods, thankfully!

If they still do it, I was going to check with Mike and Hondaman, and see if they still head work. Just to get a mild port job. I thought I remember Mike kind of stepping out of that, but that was a few years ago.

Most of the work, I will be doing myself, aside from porting and boring, as I don't have the tools.

However, I will check those sites. I found a bunch on partsnmore.com, which I had used years back with success.

I'll have to read around, and see what new practices are common, such as what the heck is an M unit!

I'm still at it, although the K8 doesn't need much port work: that one and the F2/3 have the best ports of the 750 series.
When you get to the boring part, be SURE the machinist knows you want "impossibly tight" piston clearance or 0.0008". If they balk, send them to me and I'll get that done. Without that in the K7/8, the results will be more than disappointing.

That's good to know about the 78 heads. At least the 78 has the best of something!  ;D  Though the valve seats will probably still need cutting.
Given the relative lack of engine shops in my area, I'll probably end up sending it to you. I think there are 2 in my area, both of which mainly do chunky v-twins.

It'll be a few months, bike is currently in my shed, with a snowbank in front of the door.

So where are you located Eldar? (No location in your profile, snowbank in front of the shed.......)

Stock Honda parts, that are still available, are usually cheaper at South Sound Honda in Washington state, USA than at partsnmore.

No rush: I'm neck-deep in the 500/550 book right now. That's OK because it's too cold to work in the garage, anyway.

Except when I find that I'm missing [yet] another picture I need.

Yeah, makes me wish I had a heated garage, but it never got wired for 220. Couple days this week, and last week, we had a couple -20f days. Before the wind even gets ya.

For newday777, I updated my profile a bit.
Stev-o I might do a build thread. Perhaps it'll be useful in avoiding some pitfalls.
