500/4 tank paint scheme
« on: January 27, 2025, 07:40:24 AM »
My 500/4 is Candy gold.  Looking at using VMR paint for the gold part.  What was used on the black portion in terms of sheen?  I've got some singlestage non-metallic black but not sure I can clear over it.  What do people typically use here?  My plan is to clear over everything.

The basecoat I use is either PPG DBC9700 or Omni MBC9300. Omni is made by PPG and it half the price. It'll be a perfect match.

I have found you can Clearcoat over anything. Even rattlecans. I have never had a lifting or reaction using Omni/PPG Clearcoats.

VMR also sells a Black to spray over the gold, I just bought some. Haven't used it yet, though: it was what they recommended for the 550K1 I'm doing now that looks like your avatar bike.

I am not a fan of any VMR paint. It's way over priced and thinned down 100 percent. It's like water. Buy a pint(8 oz) and you are really getting 4 oz of actual paint!
My local Wesco can match any sample I present. Very close match

The paint on my bike is very faded so I have nothing to bring them to match. I’ve used a local automotive paint store for other projects and it’s never cheap.  How hard is it to match a candy type paint?

Almost impossible, its a 3 stage process
1 mettallic base
2 transparent colour the changes with number of coats
3 laquer

All 3 are normally isocyanate paints which need air fed mask

All three of mine are street legal. I ride them often around town. Every friend I have when they come over they ask if we can go ride around. Like we were 12 again.
They haul my 220lbs around just fine.
People ask what I do in retirement.. I say " Burn Gas"

I’ve got a title for mine, but I mostly rip around my property with it. It’s a ton of fun in the snow. I had one as a kid so it’s nostalgic.
