By this rationale, the auto industry is nothing but a killing machine.  And, possibly more effective than all the dreadnoughts combined.  By a simmilar association, I can claim that clothes are killing machines, too.  They are used in nearly ALL wars, murders, crimes, etc., designed and made to kill.  Yeah... killing machines.  Beware the sheets on your bed.  Designed for strangulation, methinks.. in the right (or wrong) hands.
...This isn't logic. This isn't rational.  This is rationalizing.

Machines do not kill people.  Man kills people.  Judge man, not the machine.
...This isn't logic. This isn't rational.  This is rationalizing.

btw... i never stated anything about my respect or possible lack of respect toward the machines... i made a comment dripping w/ sarcasm and you guys jump all over me about things that you only speculated.

perhaps, i really do like machines made for the sole purpose of destruction (and you can't argue that fact that they were built for destructive purposes, which also happens to be very dissimilar to the jeans, shirt and shoes that i am wearing) and i was cheering them on.

perhaps, i really don't give a damn what country i live in or who fought what army mistakingly thinking they were fighting "my" war, perhaps, i live my own life and no country or government will stifle my words.  perhaps, "my" army and weapons don't consist of gov't property or bullet throwers but, rather, they consist of my teachers and family and friends and my ideas and my own words because the only war that i'm concerned w/ is my own life.  your right though... my respect lies elsewhere in regards to patriotism.

but, as far as those dreadnoughts go... yay for killing machines

i live my own life and no country or government will stifle my words.

Spoken by someone that has enjoyed freedom his entire life.  Men, women and children will be tortured and/or killed today for speaking out in countires with governments that do stifle words.

I'm done discussing this.  I come here to read and discuss motorcycles and occasionally share other interests with people with similar interests.  The only thing we all have in common is motorcycles and that's it.  Occasionally other topics come up and much smaller groups of people with similar interest will discuss.  If you're not interested, then move on.  What was your reason for injecting your sarcasm in a harmless discussion that a few members were enjoying, but now due to our drivel seems to be have been killed?

You don't have to answer that except to yourself if you want.  As I said, I'm done discussing and I apologize to others for contributing to pulling this thread away from what it was.  I hope others will continue the thread and Gerhed, I hope this doesn't inhibit you from posting your excellent photographs, regardless of the subject (providing they don't break any forum rules).   ;)

You gents must have followed the story about how San Fran rejected the Iowa last summer:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/07/14/BAGLJDNMCA1.DTL

I am still ashamed.

When was the USS Iowa decommissioned ? I seem to remember it was used in the Gulf war and I saw it in 82/83 in the Ingles shipyard in Pascagoula MS, it was in for a refit, it was a big mof.  ;D ;D

She was decommisioned in 1990.  Just for fun, I used Google Earth the other night and found all 4 of these great old ships.  They are very distinctive, even from high altitude.

Missouri is in the USS Oklahoma's berth, Battleship Row, Pearl Harbor, HI
Iowa is with the Naval Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay, Just off Benicia, CA
New Jersey is on public display in Camden, NJ and
Wisconsin is at Nauticus, in Norfolk, VA right across from the Portsmouth Navy yards
Currently '77 CB750F2
Formerly '73 CL-350 Twin, '81 GS-650E, '83 VF-750C Magna (till some sum#$%* stole it)

I've only ever Google Earth'd the NJ, believe it or not the view was of some use when building my model ;D

Like you say Orcinus, they aren't hard to spot ;)

Here's a thought, I wonder if any active ships are visible on there? They probably would be if they were in port at the time the overhead was taken.  I'm going to have to look now ::)

Re: Sam's question, wasn't Iowa put into the reserve fleet in the late '80s, and re-activated for the Gulf War? I'll ask Wikipedia - They'll know :)

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Captain Bringdown's spurious bleating, I offer this link to the USS Texas.
http://www.ctomscott.com/index.htm
I must have spent more than two hours on well done picture tours of the ship.

I think I'll try to go see it during my visit with my sister in Texas this year.

If you look at Norfolk, VA you'll see USS Enterprise, USS T. Roosevelt, and either the USS Nimitz, or USS Eisenhower (pics a little blurry), along with just about every type of ship we've got. Look closely and you'll see some subs too.

Go across the waterway to Newport News and you will see more being built.  It's funny that others have used Google Earth to look at things like this.  I thought I was the odd man out.  I was using Google Earth to see how many military aircraft I could find.  Not to get this ship thread going elsewhere, but here are a few:

This should prob. be in the "Phantom" thread but WTH...

This is part of the boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB in AZ. These images always break my heart, but it's a good way to test yourself on aircraft recognition.  ;D

Wow!  If you can identify all of those, you are way better than me.  Other than the F-14's, which are a given, I would be guessing w/ F-4 and really guessing at maybe some A-4's and some helos without the rotors.  The others, I have no clue.   ???

Well I count definitely 13 Tomcats, 14 what look like Crusaders, more Phantoms than I can be bothered counting, and are the smaller ones A4s?

Just looked D-M AFB up on wikipedia, and apparently they currently have over 700 Phantoms there, over half of which can be made flight ready in less than a month ;D

A revival on this thread because I've just remembered this:

I wish I could claim the credit :)

It was found a while ago by an aquaintance on another forum, he found it when he was looking for his house;D  It just took me a while to remember where I'd stored the co-ords ::)

I just hope the delivery doors were closed at the time :o
