I was in Phuket briefly 4 or 5 years ago during the bike week. Uhhh, a little different than bike weeks here. A million scooters.

You should visit central Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam at rush hour.  I was trying to cross the street and I am not exaggerating there were over 50 lanes of scooters in one direction and 50 lanes of scooters in the other direction.  Try crossing that traffic on foot - truly an Extreme Sport.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever been down there?

I go to Phuket every December for the holidays but rarely go any further South.  About 20 years ago I visited Hat Yai and then on  to Malaysia traveling for about 1 month.  Beautiful Country!

I have visited Hat Yai. A few days before flying to Bangkok during a month round trip in Thailand.

A cheap hotel where I did not want to take my sandals off inside room except for when entering the bed ;)
Carpet that might have had all kinds of dirts and maybe sharp objects hidden in it.
Even worse than another cheap hotel very close to Patpong area a few years earlier ;D

We had been in Phuket 2 weeks before. Took the local bus to Krabi. It was cheaper but took most of the day. We saw a lot though during that trip. From Krabi anorher bus, quicker this time to Hat Yai.

People in Hat Yai were not as friendly as further north. A little bit more reserved as I saw when visiting Malaysia a few years earlier, Penang.

I understand those that never stop to visit Thailand a month or 2 every year. Or even stay there.

I certainly would not want to take my sandals off and walk on the dirt floor where the Red Honda CB750 is gathering dust ;)

I ad the same experience. Just have to wade in and keep going so they can know where you'll be. Stopping or doing something unexpected is what gets you hit.

Vietnam passed new road rules on Jan 1 that are supposed to make things safer, although for pedestrians crossing busy scooter-filled roads you now have to make a hand gesture to let people know you are crossing. Kind of putting the onus on the pedestrian...

I saw this photo today on my facebook feed and sent the photo to the Red Honda CB750 seller as a "suggestion"

Hat Yai is in Songkhla, one of the regions in the South that has a Malay population that includes separatists and rebels. These provinces are poor, and persecuted by the central government, which also tries to move ethnic Thais there, convert people to Buddhism, and make people use the Thai language. Separatism is one of my research interests so I found Narathiwat pretty interesting, and despite the poverty and heavy atmosphere people were great. I also work mostly in very poor regions of Indonesia so I'm used to abject poverty I guess.

I am a firm believer in not discussing politics or religion . . . it divides people  and creates unneccesary conflict.  Thank you!

Just an explanation why southern Thailand is poor. Nobody is taking a political position.
