Topic: A '74 build after being away from CBs for too long

Hey hey, so the CB siren call was just too much... And I went and bought a rough 1974.
I have a '69 that I have been messing with on and off ,trying to get running right, for a few years, but it's been on the back burner for a while, and I've been busy with a couple of others(BMW r50/2/CBX1000/VFR750) that I have built up in the meantime.

But in all that I have missed the 74 I had about 15-20 years ago. That was my first foray into restoring, anyhow, this one popped up , and even though I knew it was going  to be more expensive and time consuming than I would like, or even what she would be worth, I had to get her.

I have read countless posts of restorations here, and i don't imagine this being particularly noteworthy so I won't bore you with words, if you have any questions, shoot. Anyhow , here are the pics

So... engine was siezed, covered in years and years of muck and doghair and what smells like #$%@, si gloves and a clean off.Engines gotta come out and its gonna be a full rebuild

Some Hubs prepped (there are a lot of Doubles as i have a Cb750F2 thats been a cafe project for about forever) so i am just doing 2x alot of the stuff



Shocks are leaking and rusted to hell, David Silver has some replacements ill have to get



Most of the Chrome is so far gone as to require a rechrome

I dont have a mig/tig welder, so used this method in the past which has worked for broken fins

Additionally after years of trial and mainly error i have come to the conculsion i am a rubbish mechanic. I  previously completed assembly of the 69 engine with a mate, and after bolting everything together , she spat, farted and leaked. She ran but not well, so with this one i have decided to take this engine to another guy i know who knows the engines well.

69 engine will be going to him as soon as funds allow...

Ohhh..shiny, Engine has been vapourblasted and the common  drivechain smash/crack weldedup



So diagnosis is: new rings. hone, new camchain/tensioners, new primary chain and main bearing, reconned oil pump

I guess i am buying David Silver a new pool, but in for a penny and all that.
So i should have a nice new powerplant.
While its at the mac, i am gonna get onto the other stuff....

Another thing i have noticed, the knock on effect
-you start on one a part, get it looking like new_fantastic!
-and then everything else then looks like ####
-necessitating getting the next part in the same condition
-necessitating the budget revision

rinse and repeat until complete or broke

Those caliper arms with the "C" mounting brackets are for K0-K2 forks, and won't work with the K4 fork lowers.

Agreed about it being a JDM, we had some funny stuff going on back in the day, in that "apparently" this was amongst a batch of grey imports into the country (South Africa), some circumvention of some law or another.

Thanks mate, agreed, i have some different shafts with the later mounting brackets...I just get to the stage where i am cleaning and spraying so try to do whatever i have laying around all at once, probably in anticipation of hopefully getting more CB's in the future

That is a full restore from something found in or outside a barn under a layer of protective manure to a very beautiful bike as it left Honda back in the days!!
