Sparty Comes to Boston
« on: April 15, 2007, 07:35:36 PM »
On Saturday it was the meeting of SOHC minds...Art (Sparty) drove 4+ hours from Pennsylvania with his CB750K2 engine (well wrapped in plastic) in the back of his car. His mission - to deliver the whole engine to Mike Rieck, and deliver all the new parts (list to long to mention here but basics - 836cc kit, new pistons, valves, rods etc etc - all the best stuff!). It was good to finally meet Art and an afternoon drinking Chimay, eating the famous Rieck burgers (delicious!) and talking engines, Dynas and SOHC in general ensued. Photos below tell the story and some short video clips to follow...

Mike and Art (Sparty)

See you again in a couple of months Art!

Thanks Andy....certainly was a good time for me. As Art put it..."great fellowship". PS   Art is the young, fit, good looking guy. :D....not that Ben and I don't have attractive characteristics that only age and wisdom can bring ;) ;) ;D

Man, if those photos were black and white they would look just like something from the '60s. Caption could read...

"Young upstart hotshoe racer Arthur Crewcut hanging around the shop and trying to explain how the rear tire chatters under WFO throttle while more "mature" bearded gentlemen who have a strong desire to live past the age of 30 try to translate his complaints into something tangible. Gentlemen who long ago decided that discretion was the better part of valor and decided to wrench on bikes rather than race them. Young upstart hotshoe racer gets distracted and leaves halfway through discussion to meet up with trophy girl from last week's race while graybeards settle in for an all-night engine rebuild."

Damn, all you guys need is an old van!

Hey Andy,

You'll be hearing from my lawyer concerning those ugly photoshop distorted representations of me.
I'm really 17 and an Adonis!

Seriously, it's really a great honor to accept Mike's gracious hospitality and to share conversation with Mike, Andy and Art, three guys who are as passionate about bikes as they are knowledgeable.

Thanks guys,
Ben

Andy, Mike, and Ben,

You guys are top notch.  I enjoyed every second of our time together.  I only regret not having more time to talk and share large quantities of Chimay.  When it comes time to return, I plan on getting a hotel room so that I have more than a few hours to visit with everyone.

Andy, thanks for taking the photos and bringing the Chimay.  It was great to meet such a fine Scot.

Mike, my head is still spinning from looking at your "Million Dollar" CB.  And your knowledge about performance upgrades.... I am speechless.  The grilled lunch was perfect and your wife and children are wonderful.  Thank you for being such a good, honest, hardworking guy.  I am glad to have begun this friendship.

Ben (Adonis), it was a pleasure meeting you and finding that you are now a CB owner as well.  I left the Dyna S ignition with Mike in case you are interested in it.

Aside:  The drivers in CT are mad!  On my way up to Boston I was stopped dead on the interstate for about 30 mins. because of a car accident.  On my return trip, the east bound lane was backed up for five miles because of a multi-car accident.  I have never seen worse drivers than those in CT.  The would ride my rear bumper, switch two lanes without their winkers, spike their brakes and then gun the gas, pass on the side of the median kicking up all types of debris, etc.  Pure madness.

Looks like you all had a good meet and wrench session complete with all the trimmings. My biggest question is for Sparty.......hows the healing coming along and do you think you will really be down for 2007 riding?

I am hoping that I will be on my bike by mid-July.  The healing is coming along slowly but better tahn I expected.  It will take time to get my strength back.  I want to be 100% before I ride again.  Thanks for asking.

Determined not to be out done by you lot over the big pond, I called in to my local supermarket to see if they sold this Chimay super beer. ::)
They did, 7% proof in a 0.33 ltr bottle, it wasn't the special reserve, just the normal stuff the peasants drink ;D

Can I ask how much you would pay for the same in the States ?

Thats ok Raul, I know how you feel....or maybe I dont  ;D

Sam, the Chimay (the regular stuff) goes for $9 (or 4 pounds 50 pence at todays 2 for 1 exchange rate) for a 500ml bottle. The special reserve is $10-$11 depending on where you buy it. We cant buy alcohol in supermarkets here...the puritans have not legalised that....they tried in the last local election and it failed to pass  ::)...however there is one local "supermarket" (TraderJoes for the locals here) that is allowed to sell alcohol and food together but Im not sure how they get away with that.....

cheers
Andy
